Hair extension methods

Hair extensions are available in many techniques - from permanent methods that are sewn in, taped in, or attached with keratin, to loose hairpieces that you can put in and remove yourself. The method that suits you depends on how thick your own hair is, how long you want the attachment to last, and how much maintenance you prefer.

FAIRWITHHAIR EXTENSION METHODS

Sew in Hair Extensions & Weft Hair

Sew-in is a hair extension method where the extensions are attached by sewing a weft onto a braid close to the scalp. The method is completely free from glue, heat, and chemicals and never touches the natural hair strand.

✓ Sew-in wig for braids, glue-free
✓ Normally suitable for thick hair
✓ Lasts 2–3 months, can be sewn again
✓ Gentle, but may feel tight

Tape Extensions (Tape Hair)

Tape extensions are a hair extension method in which thin, pre-taped strands are attached around your own hair in a sandwich layer. The strands lie flat against the head and are almost undetectable even in fine hair.

✓ Taped hair extensions, attached in pairs
✓ Suitable for thin to normal hair
✓ Lasts 8–10 weeks, then the tape is replaced
✓ Discreet and flat, but requires more frequent maintenance

Micro weft

Micro Weft is a hair extension method in which a thin weft loop is attached with small silicone rings or sewn onto a narrow braid. The attachments are minimal, making the loop lie flat and remain invisible even in thinner hair.

✓ Thin weft, attached with microrings
✓ Suitable for thin to normal hair
✓ Lasts 2–3 months, moved up
✓ Discreet and glue-free, but contains nickel

Keratin Extensions – Nail Hair

Nail Hair is a hair extension method where individual strands are attached with a keratin nail that is melted around your own hair using heat. The bonds are small and flexible, allowing the hair to be tied up and styled freely.

✓ Keratin bond, fused in place with heat
✓ Normally suitable for thick, healthy hair
✓ Lasts 3–4 months, then needs to be refitted
✓ Lasts the longest and sits invisibly, but requires heat and a long application time

Butterfly Weft

Butterfly Weft is a hair extension method in which an extra-thin, double-folded weft is sewn onto a flat braid close to the scalp. The attachment is so thin and soft that it is barely noticeable, while still providing full volume all the way to the ends.

✓ Thin double-folded weft, sewn onto a braid
✓ Suitable for fine to normal hair and sensitive scalps
✓ Lasts 1–2 months, then needs to be sewn back on
✓ Extra comfortable and flat, but requires an experienced hairdresser

Full weave with leave-out

Full Weave is a hair extension method in which the entire head is braided down and weft sections are sewn onto the braids, while a thin section of your own hair is left free at the top. The leave-out section is placed over the attachments, creating a completely natural-looking scalp and parting.

✓ Almost all the hair is braided, the weft is sewn on, and your own hair is placed over it
✓ Normally suitable for thick hair
✓ Lasts 2–3 months, then needs to be sewn back on
✓ Biggest transformation and most natural-looking top, but the leave-out must be heat-styled to match.

Weave with Closure / Frontal

Weave with a closure or frontal is a hair extension method in which the entire head is braided down and completely covered with weft strands, while a lace piece finishes the top. A closure covers the middle of the head, while a frontal extends from ear to ear, and both provide a natural-looking hairline without leaving any of your own hair loose.

✓ Weft sewn onto braids, closure/frontal at the top
✓ Suitable for all hair types, including thin and curly hair
✓ Lasts 2–3 months, then needs to be sewn back on
✓ Protects all your natural hair completely, but the lace requires proper care

Mesh Integration

Mesh Integration is a hair extension method in which a thin, breathable mesh is attached to the scalp and hair extensions are sewn onto the mesh. The natural hair is pulled through the mesh and blended with the extensions, providing volume without putting any strain on the natural hair strands.

✓ Net attached to the scalp, hair sewn onto the net
✓ Suitable for thin hair and hair loss
✓ Lasts 6–10 weeks, then needs to be refitted
✓ Protects all your natural hair completely, but the net requires care

Braids - box braids, Dutch braids, and more.

Braids are a hair extension method in which extensions are braided into your own hair and remain as a hairstyle for several weeks. Depending on the technique, the hair is either braided while hanging freely or tightly against the head, but the principle is the same - no glue, no heat

✓ Hair extensions are braided in from the roots, either loosely or close to the head
✓ Suitable for all hair types
✓ Lasts 3 weeks–3 months
✓ Protective and maintenance-free,

Crochet

Crochet is a hair extension method in which extensions are attached to cornrows using a crochet hook instead of being sewn or braided in. The hair is applied in pre-looped strands, making the installation significantly faster than traditional braiding.

✓ Hair is crocheted into cornrows
✓ Suitable for all hair types
✓ Lasts 2-3 months, then needs to be refitted
✓ Fast and protective, but the attachments may be visible if the base is sparse

Halo Hairband

Halo is a hair extension method in which the extensions are attached to an invisible wire that is placed over the head like a band. No attachment touches your own hair - the wire is completely concealed by a thin layer of your own hair placed over it.

✓ Hair with an invisible thread, placed over the head
✓ Suitable for all hair types, including fragile or thin hair
✓ Removed daily
✓ Completely tension-free and takes seconds, but provides less volume than permanent methods

Clip-on set

Clip-on is a hair extension method in which ready-made strands with small clips are attached to your own hair in just a few minutes. The set can be put in and removed completely by yourself, without salon visits and without a permanent attachment.

✓ Clip-in highlights, click into place
✓ Suitable for all hair types and anyone who wants temporary volume
✓ Removed every evening
✓ Completely gentle and flexible, but it does not stay in place overnight or during exercise

Ponytail

A ponytail is a detachable hairpiece that attaches around your own ponytail and adds length and fullness in seconds. Nothing is attached to the scalp, and it can be removed whenever you want.

✓ Ponytail that attaches around your ponytail holder
✓ Suitable for all hair types
✓ Removed daily
✓ Quick results without attachment to your own hair, but only works with hair tied up

Hair Topper

A hair topper is a hairpiece placed over the top of the head that adds volume exactly where the hair has thinned. It is secured to your own hair with small clips and takes just a few minutes to put in.

✓ Small hairpiece with clips
✓ Suitable for anyone with thinning hair or hair loss
✓ Removed daily
✓ Quick and gentle solution, but only covers the top

Wig

A wig is a method in which the hair is worn as a complete hairpiece over your own hair instead of being attached to it. Your own hair is braided or pinned up flat underneath, and the wig is secured with clips, tape, or adhesive along the hairline.

✓ Full hairpiece, attaches over your own hair
✓ Suitable for everyone, including those with hair loss or very thin hair
✓ Removed daily
✓ Total freedom and protects all your natural hair, but requires the right fit

Hair extension methods - how to choose the right technique

Hair extensions are available in many techniques - from permanent methods that are sewn, taped or attached with keratin, to loose hairpieces that you put in and take out yourself. Which hair extension method suits you best depends on how thick your own hair is, how long the attachment should stay in place and how much time you want to spend on maintenance.

Permanent methods that stay in place for several months

Permanent methods are attached in a salon and remain in place around the clock until it is time for an adjustment. Sew-in extensions (weft hair) are attached by sewing a weft onto a braid close to the head - completely without glue or heat, making it one of the gentlest methods for normal to thick hair. Micro weft and butterfly weft are based on the same principle, but with thinner attachments and less volume at the roots, making them better choices if you have fine hair or a sensitive scalp.

Tape extensions are attached as a sandwich layer around your own hair and lie flat against the head, making the method discreet even in fine hair - however, they require retaping approximately every eight to ten weeks. Nail hair (keratin extensions/bonding) is attached strand by strand using a keratin bond that is melted into place with heat. This is the longest-lasting and most free-moving of our methods, but it requires healthy natural hair and more time in the chair.

Braid-based methods and weave

Braid-based techniques protect your own hair by braiding it down before the extensions are attached. Full weave with leave out provides maximum length and volume while leaving some of your own hair free at the top for a natural parting. Weave with closure or frontal instead covers the entire head and is finished with a lace piece at the top, completely protecting all your own hair and providing an invisible hairline.

Braids - box braids, knotless braids, cornrows and twists - are a type of hair extension where the extensions are braided into your own hair and remain as a hairstyle for several weeks. Crochet builds on the same base but is quicker to install, as ready-made strands are hooked into already braided cornrows with a crochet hook.

Loose hairpieces you put in yourself

If you want to avoid salon visits, there are methods you can manage entirely yourself. Clip-on sets are secured in place within a few minutes and removed in the evening. Halo hairband rests on an invisible wire over your head without any attachment to your own hair, while a ponytail is secured around a ready-made ponytail for instant length. All three have one thing in common: they do not put any strain on your hair at all - the trade-off is that they cannot be worn overnight or during exercise.

Solutions for thinning hair and hair loss

For hair loss and very thinning hair, regular hair extensions are rarely enough. A hair topper is a smaller hairpiece that covers the top of the head, where hair most often becomes thinnest, while a wig covers the entire head and gives you complete freedom regardless of how much natural hair remains. Mesh integration is a middle ground, where a thin mesh is attached to the scalp and extensions are sewn onto the mesh without placing any tension on your own hair strands.

Which hair extension method should you choose?

If you have fine hair, tape extensions, micro weft or butterfly weft are the best options because the attachments are small and lie flat. If you have normal to thick hair, you can choose freely from sew-in extensions, nail hair and weave. If you want maximum flexibility without a long-term commitment, clip-on, halo hairband or ponytail are the right choices, and if you are experiencing hair loss, a hair topper, wig or mesh integration are the safest alternatives.

Regardless of the method, hair quality determines the result. Genuine Remy hair retains the cuticles in the same direction, which keeps the hair soft, reduces tangling and allows it to be colored and heat-styled just like your own. If you are unsure which method is right for your hair, we are happy to help you choose the right one during a free consultation.
