All about keratin treatment
A keratin treatment tames frizz and leaves your hair soft, glossy and easier to style. Let's clear up the most common misconception straight away: the treatment does not straighten your hair. Your natural texture stays – if you have curly hair, your curls often become more refined and defined, not straight.
What the treatment does – and doesn't do
Keratin is a protein that's already found in hair, skin and nails. The treatment fills in the porous and damaged parts of the hair strand and seals the cuticle. The result is hair that resists humidity, needs less flat-ironing and dries more evenly.
What the treatment doesn't do is change your curl pattern. If you want completely straight hair, a permanent straightening (rakpermanent) is the method, not keratin. If you want to keep your curls but make them softer, a texturizer is the middle ground. We offer all three in both Stockholm and Uppsala.
Who is it for?
The treatment suits most hair types, but it makes the biggest difference if any of this sounds familiar: your hair frizzes as soon as the air is humid, you straighten or blow-dry almost every day to get it the way you want, or your curls look undefined rather than structured.
If you have bleached or fine hair, there are gentler options – we choose the product to suit the condition of your hair, not the other way round.
How the treatment works
First, your hair is washed with a deep-cleansing shampoo that opens up the hair. The product is then applied in thin sections, left to work and sealed with heat. The whole treatment usually takes two to three hours, depending on the length and thickness of your hair.
How long does it last?
Because the treatment doesn't break down the hair's internal sulphur bonds, the result is semi-permanent. It washes out gradually over three to six months, depending on your lifestyle, hair care and how closely you follow the aftercare advice. That's why the transition is soft as your hair grows – there's no visible line to hide, unlike a permanent straightening growing out.
Before and after – what to expect
The difference shows most clearly on humid days and in how much time you spend on your hair. Hair that used to need twenty minutes with a flat iron can become hair you simply air-dry. But don't expect a before-and-after photo where curly hair has turned poker-straight – photos like that show permanent straightening, not keratin.
Aftercare
Switch to sulphate-free products. Sulphates and salts dissolve the keratin prematurely and can halve the life of the treatment. Add a deeply nourishing hair mask to your weekly routine, and use heat protection whenever you do heat-style.
Book in Stockholm or Uppsala
We offer keratin treatments at both our salons, at Norrtullsgatan 26A by Odenplan and at Skolgatan 49 in Uppsala. The price depends on the length and thickness of your hair.
