All about afro relaxers
An Afro relaxer is the treatment for you if you have Afro hair and want a sleek, straight and easy-to-manage result. The treatment straightens the hair chemically and is permanent on the treated hair. We do Afro relaxers at our salons in Stockholm by Odenplan and in Uppsala.
How an Afro relaxer works
A relaxer changes the structure of the hair so the curls are straightened. The treated hair stays straight. As your hair grows, only the new growth at the roots is treated – treating already straight hair again causes unnecessary wear. That way the result stays even over time without damaging the lengths.
Relaxer, texturizer or keratin?
If you want to keep your curls but make them softer and more manageable, a texturizer is a better fit. If you want less frizz and more shine without your hair becoming straight, a keratin treatment is the right choice – it washes out over 3–6 months and can also be done at home with Cocochoco, where Onyx is developed for dark and black hair. Keratin doesn't straighten the hair. See the full comparison of the treatments.
Before the treatment
We start by going through the condition of your hair and any previous treatments. If your hair has recently been coloured, bleached or chemically treated, we make a plan so it doesn't get too much at once. Your scalp should be healthy and free from irritation before the treatment.
Caring for relaxed Afro hair
After a relaxer your hair needs lots of moisture and protein. Use a moisturising sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, apply a hydrating mask regularly and always use heat protection when styling. Oil the lengths for softness and protect your hair at night with a silk scarf or silk bonnet.
Extensions that match relaxed Afro hair
If you'd like more length or volume after your relaxer, we have Yaki extensions – a straight texture with body and a more matte shine that blends with relaxed Afro hair. We install them as a sew-in at both our salons.
