All about texturizers
A texturizer is for you if you have Afro hair or very tightly curled hair and want softer, looser and more manageable curls – without your hair becoming straight. The treatment makes your hair easier to detangle, cuts down your styling time and gives curls that are easier to define. We do texturizers at our salons in Stockholm and Uppsala.
How a texturizer works
A texturizer is a mild chemical treatment that's left on for a shorter time than a relaxer. It loosens the curl pattern so the curls become bigger, softer and less tight, but it doesn't straighten the hair. The result is permanent on the treated hair. As your hair grows, new growth at the roots is treated as it comes in so the transition stays even.
Texturizer, Afro relaxer or keratin?
If you want completely straight hair, an Afro relaxer is the right treatment – it straightens the hair completely. If you want to keep your curl pattern but have less frizz and more shine without any chemical change, a keratin treatment is a good fit; it washes out over 3–6 months and can also be done at home. The texturizer sits in between: the curls stay, but they become softer and easier to manage. See the full comparison of the treatments.
Before the treatment
We always check the condition of your hair first. If your hair has recently been coloured, bleached or chemically treated in another way, we make a plan so your hair doesn't get too much at once. Tell us about previous treatments at the consultation – it determines how we work.
Care after a texturizer
After a texturizer your hair needs extra moisture. Use a moisturising sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, apply a hydrating mask regularly and use a leave-in or curl cream to define your curls. Only comb damp hair with a wide-tooth comb, and ideally sleep in a silk scarf or silk bonnet to reduce friction.
