Choosing between a Human Hair wig and a synthetic wig comes down to feel, styling, care, durability, and price. Both can look beautiful - they suit different lifestyles.
Short answer: choose Human Hair if you want maximum naturalness and styling freedom; choose synthetic if you want a ready-made hairstyle with minimal daily care.
Human Hair wig
Made from real human hair. It moves softly, falls naturally, and feels like your own hair. You can blow-dry, straighten, and curl it as long as you use heat protectant.
The price of that freedom is care. Wig hair does not receive sebum from a scalp, so all moisture must be added from the outside - otherwise it dries out and tangles.
Synthetic wig
Made from synthetic fiber shaped to retain its style. It is ready to wear straight out of the package and keeps its shape wash after wash.
Standard synthetic fiber cannot tolerate heat at all. Heat-resistant synthetic fiber can withstand up to approximately 160 degrees, which is lower than the standard setting on most flat irons - always check the product page.
What looks most natural?
Human Hair usually looks the most natural because it moves and reflects light like natural hair.
But the construction matters at least as much as the fiber. A synthetic wig with a lace front and monofilament can look more realistic than a cheap Human Hair wig with a machine-sewn top. We explain the differences in Monofilament, mono-top, and silk base.
What is easiest to care for?
Synthetic, without a doubt. It retains its shape after washing and requires no styling.
The same basics apply to both: use suitable products, brush gently from the bottom upward, wash in lukewarm water, air-dry, and store on a wig stand. Read more in How to make your wig last another year.
Which lasts the longest?
Human Hair, with proper care often lasting several years. A synthetic wig worn daily is more often a seasonal product.
Another difference is that Human Hair can be renovated. Bands, lace, and the cap are replaceable components, and hair can be ventilated again. A tangled synthetic strand cannot be repaired, only replaced.
What is suitable for hair loss?
Both work. What matters is that the wig feels comfortable and suits your everyday life, not what material it is made from.
Many people choose heat-resistant synthetic for their first wig, especially during treatment when energy is limited, and switch to Human Hair later. See our medical wigs.
How to choose
Start by measuring the circumference of your head so the fit is right from the beginning. Then consider how much styling you actually want to do on a typical morning and how often the wig will be worn.

Frequently asked questions
Can you feel the difference when touching the hair?
Yes, most noticeably when the hair is freshly washed. Synthetic fiber feels smoother and slightly cooler to the touch, while Human Hair has more variation from strand to strand. At a distance, the difference is much smaller than most people think.
Can they be mixed - are there wigs made with both Human Hair and synthetic fiber?
Yes, blended-fiber wigs are available and usually have Human Hair at the hairline and synthetic fiber throughout the rest. This provides a natural hairline at a lower cost, but the two materials require different care, making everyday maintenance more complicated for anyone who wants to keep things simple.
Why does my synthetic wig look shiny?
New synthetic fiber often has a factory shine that looks unnatural in daylight. It fades over time and can be toned down immediately with a little dry shampoo applied lightly over the surface. Avoid oils - they make the fiber heavy and dull instead.
