The most common question from someone growing out a short hairstyle: can hair extensions be applied already? The answer is usually yes, but with two conditions.
How short is too short?
You need approximately 10–15 cm of your own hair for the application to be concealed. With shorter hair, there is not enough of your own hair to cover the attachments, and they will be visible when the hair moves.
The transition is the tricky part
Extending short hair significantly creates a noticeable “step” where your own hair ends. The solution is partly not to add too much length at once, and partly to add extra hair higher up so that the thickness is maintained all the way down.
Our recommendation
- Take it in two steps - a moderate length now, and more at the next move-up
- Choose volume rather than maximum length the first time
- Expect the blending cut to take longer than usual
When we say wait
If your hair is barely below your ears, we recommend waiting a few more months. Quite simply, the result will not be good, and you will be paying for something you will want to have redone.
