Hair extensions – how to choose the right ones
Choosing hair extensions comes down to five things: quality, fullness, length, texture and colour. The right combination makes the extensions blend with your own hair, look natural and last a long time. In this hair extensions guide we go through each choice step by step, so you know what to look for before you buy. We have worked with hair extensions since 2009 and are happy to help you all the way – online, by photo or in our salons in Stockholm and Uppsala.
Real hair or synthetic extensions?
Our real hair extensions are 100% real human hair. They can be straightened, curled and coloured just like your own hair, and with the right care they last a long time. We recommend having the extensions coloured by a stylist so the hair is protected. If you would like a vegan alternative, there are synthetic hair extensions. They tolerate heat styling up to 120 °C but cannot be coloured, and they do not last as long as real hair. Synthetic extensions are always clearly labelled in our shop.
Classic, Premium and Luxury – three qualities
Our real hair extensions come in three qualities. Classic is real hair at a lower price and a good choice if you want to try extensions or wear them less often. Premium is Remy hair and lasts longer. Luxury is our best quality – real Remy hair that lasts the longest. Choose based on how often you wear the hair and how long you want it to last. If you wear your extensions every day, or want to have them moved up many times, a higher quality pays off in the long run.
What is Remy hair?
Remy means that all the hairs lie in the same direction, from root to tip, with the cuticles intact. When the cuticles face the same way, the hairs do not catch on each other, which is why Remy hair tangles less and lasts longer. Our Premium and Luxury hair is Remy. It is one of the most important differences to know about when you compare hair extensions.
Single drawn or double drawn?
Single drawn contains hairs of different lengths and therefore tapers naturally towards the ends – just like growing hair. Double drawn is sorted by hand one extra time so the shorter hairs are removed, making it equally thick from the attachment to the ends. Single drawn looks the most natural, while double drawn gives maximum fullness. Our most common recommendation is to mix one single and one double drawn. Read more in our guide to single vs double drawn.
Length – 40, 50, 60 or 70 cm
The length of hair extensions is always measured as straight hair from the attachment. On a person around 165 cm tall, 40 cm ends just below the shoulders, 50 cm at the shoulder blades, 60 cm in the middle of the back and 70 cm at the waist. If you are taller or shorter, each length ends a little higher or lower, and curly hair looks shorter than its measured length. The longer the extensions, the more hair you need for a smooth transition. See where each length ends in our length guide.
Texture – from straight to Kinky
Choose the texture closest to your own hair and the extensions will blend in naturally. We have straight, wavy, curly and Deep Wave extensions as well as Yaki and Kinky. You can also choose a different texture if you want a new look. Compare them all on our hair textures page.
Colour – match to your lengths
Match the extensions to the lengths and ends of your own hair, not the roots, and look at the colour in daylight. Our colour chart shows every shade. If you are unsure, you can send us a photo of your hair or book a free consultation, and we will help you match it.
Method – how the extensions are attached
Once you have chosen your hair, the next step is the method. With tape, thin tapes that lie flat are applied; with keratin, the hair is attached strand by strand; and hair weft can be sewn in, attached with micro rings or fitted as butterfly weft. Clip-ins you put in and take out yourself. Compare them all on our hair extension methods page and see what fitting costs on our hair extension prices page.
Care that makes your extensions last
Wash with a sulphate-free shampoo, use a hair mask once a week and heat protection when styling. Brush from the ends upwards and loosely braid the hair when you sleep. With the right care, real hair extensions last considerably longer, and the hair can be moved up and reused.
Shop hair extensions online or in our salons
You can buy real hair extensions online or visit our salons near Odenplan in Stockholm and on Skolgatan in Uppsala. There you get a free consultation and colour matching on the spot. If you are torn between two options, we are happy to help you choose – better one question too many than extensions that do not suit you.
