Wigs – a guide from Fairwithhair

A wig can be a way to change your look, a solution when your hair becomes thin, or a source of reassurance when you lose your hair during cancer treatment. Whatever the reason, most people want the same thing: a wig that looks natural, feels comfortable and lasts. We have worked with wigs and hair replacement for 17 years, and here we've gathered the questions we're asked most often before a purchase.

Human hair wigs

A human hair wig is the most lifelike option. The hair moves, shines and feels like your own, and you can curl, straighten, blow-dry and colour it just like normal hair. Our human hair wigs come in three qualities. Classic is human hair but not Remy and lasts about 2–4 months with normal use – an affordable choice if you want to try a wig or change style often. Premium is Remy hair and lasts about 3–5 months. Luxury is our highest quality Remy hair and lasts 1–2 years, and up to 5 years if the lace is repaired or replaced. Luxury comes in sizes S, M and L and is the quality we recommend for medical hair loss.

Synthetic wigs

A synthetic wig is pre-styled from the start and keeps its style even after washing. Our vegan synthetic wigs are heat-resistant up to 120 °C, so you can refresh curls or smooth a section with low heat. A synthetic wig lasts about 1–3 months depending on how much it is worn and suits you if you want an easy everyday wig, a spare alongside a human hair wig, or to try out a new style. Synthetic wigs are sold in one size that fits most people and can be found among our synthetic wigs.

Wig styles and lace

Two wigs with the same hairstyle can feel completely different, because the construction inside differs. In a lace wig the hair is hand-tied into a thin mesh that blends into the skin, giving a natural hairline or parting. Lace Front Plus has lace along the hairline and is one of our best-selling styles. Lace Closure has the lace at the front of the top where you wear your parting. Mono Top and Mono Part have a soft monofilament that resembles the scalp, on the top and in the parting respectively. The Classic Cap is the classic wig and includes all wigs with a fringe, while Full Lace and Lace Frontal give the most freedom to part and put up the hair. Wigs for cancer and hair loss

When hair falls out during chemotherapy, with alopecia or for other medical reasons, the scalp often becomes sensitive. Then the construction matters a great deal. Lace Front Plus, Classic Cap, Mono Top and Mono Part are the most comfortable against the scalp, and all our wigs are glueless, so you don't need to use glue. For hair loss we recommend Luxury human hair or a synthetic wig – we don't recommend Classic or Premium if you are unwell. Wig requisitions in Sweden

If you lose your hair for medical reasons, you may be entitled to a requisition (rekvisition) from your Swedish region – an allowance used as full or partial payment for the wig. Fairwithhair is an approved supplier in all 21 Swedish regions. Bring the requisition to us or email it if you shop online, and we invoice the region directly. You only pay any difference. Hair toppers when you still have your own hair

If you still have your own hair but are thinning on top, a hair topper may be a better choice than a full wig. It covers the top of the head and the parting and blends with your own hair around it. Hair toppers suit hormonal hair loss, hair thinning with age or hair growing back after treatment. We have human hair toppers and synthetic hair toppers.

How to make your wig look natural

A wig that looks real comes down to three things: the right construction, the right colour and the right fit. A lace hairline or a mono parting makes the scalp look real. A colour that matches your own hair or eyebrows makes the overall look natural, and you'll find every shade in our colour chart. A wig that fits snugly and securely doesn't show. That's why we're happy to help at your fitting, and we offer cutting and styling of the wig so it becomes your own.

What affects the price of a wig

The price of a wig depends mainly on four things: whether the hair is human or synthetic, the quality of the hair, how the wig is constructed and how long it is. A hand-tied lace wig in Remy hair takes more work and lasts considerably longer than a simpler wig. So calculate the cost per month rather than just the purchase price – a Luxury wig that lasts several years often works out cheaper in the long run. If you're entitled to a requisition, you only pay any difference. If you're looking for an affordable human hair wig, Classic is our best-value option.

Care and longevity

The right care makes your wig last longer. A human hair wig is washed once a week to every other week as needed, and a synthetic wig about every other week. Use shampoo and conditioner made for wigs, brush gently and store the wig on a wig stand. Luxury wigs can be repaired and refreshed by us – we replace the lace, re-sew or add hair.
