Frequently asked questions

Questions & answers

What's the difference between a keratin treatment and a relaxer?
A keratin treatment tames frizz and adds shine but leaves your texture intact, and it washes out slowly over 3–6 months. An Afro relaxer straightens Afro hair and is permanent on the treated hair.
What's the difference between a texturizer and an Afro relaxer?
A texturizer loosens and softens the curls without straightening them. An Afro relaxer straightens the hair completely. Both are permanent on the treated hair.
Which treatment should I choose?
If you want less frizz and easier styling but want to keep your texture – choose a keratin treatment. If you want softer, looser curls in Afro hair – choose a texturizer. If you want completely straight Afro hair – choose an Afro relaxer.
Do you do relaxers on all hair types?
We do relaxers for Afro hair. If you have a different hair type and want less frizz and easier styling, a keratin treatment is the right choice.
Can I do any of the treatments at home?
A keratin treatment can be done at home with Cocochoco. We only do texturizers and Afro relaxers in the salon.
How long do the treatments last?
A keratin treatment lasts about 3–6 months. Texturizers and Afro relaxers are permanent on the treated hair, and new growth is treated as it comes in.
Can I combine keratin with a texturizer or relaxer?
We always assess the condition of your hair first. Book a free consultation and we'll go through what suits your hair and in what order.
Where do you do the treatments?
At our salons at Norrtullsgatan 26A by Odenplan in Stockholm and Skolgatan 49 in Uppsala. All treatments are available at both salons.
Do I need a consultation first?
It's not required, but we recommend it if you're unsure which treatment suits you. The consultation is free.
How do I book?
Book directly via the relevant treatment page, or call us on +46 76-415 90 00 if you have questions about appointments.

Texturizer, keratin & relaxer

Keratin treatments, texturizers and Afro relaxers are often confused, but they do three completely different things to your hair. The most common misconception is that a keratin treatment makes hair straight – it doesn't. Here we explain the differences so you can choose the treatment that gives the result you actually want.

Keratin treatment – less frizz, same texture

A keratin treatment fills porous parts of the hair strand with keratin and seals it with heat. Your hair becomes softer, glossier and less frizzy, but your natural texture stays. Curly hair often gets finer, more defined curls. The result lasts about 3–6 months and washes out gradually, so there's no visible line as your hair grows. A keratin treatment suits most hair types and can also be done at home with Cocochoco.

Texturizer – softer curls in Afro hair

A texturizer is a chemical treatment that loosens and softens the curls in Afro hair and very tightly curled hair. The hair keeps its curl pattern but becomes easier to comb, style and care for. The treatment is permanent on the treated hair, and new growth is treated as it comes in.

Afro relaxer – completely straight Afro hair

An Afro relaxer straightens Afro hair for a sleek, straight result. It's permanent on the treated hair, and at the next treatment we only work on the new growth at the roots. We do relaxers for Afro hair – if you have a different hair type and want less frizz, a keratin treatment is the right choice.

How to choose

Ask yourself what you want to achieve. If you want less frizz and shorter styling time but want to keep your texture – choose a keratin treatment. If you want softer, more manageable curls in Afro hair – choose a texturizer. If you want completely straight Afro hair – choose an Afro relaxer. If you're unsure, we'll look at your hair at a free consultation and suggest the treatment that suits you.

Aftercare decides the result

Whatever the treatment, the right care makes a big difference. After a keratin treatment, wait 72 hours before your first wash and switch to sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner. After a texturizer or relaxer, your hair needs extra moisture and protein, and you should avoid several chemical treatments at once.

Book in Stockholm or Uppsala

We offer all three treatments at our salons at Norrtullsgatan 26A by Odenplan in Stockholm and Skolgatan 49 in Uppsala. We have worked with hair for 17 years and support you all the way – from choosing the treatment to care advice afterwards. If you'd also like more length or volume, we have Yaki extensions that match relaxed Afro hair and Kinky for natural Afro hair.
