A toupee and a men’s wig are often used as if they were the same thing. The basic difference is just one thing: how large an area they cover.

A toupee covers part of the head

A toupee covers the top of the head and the hairline, while your own hair on the sides and at the nape remains and is visible. This means you need to have hair left there, and it must be possible to match its color and texture.

A wig covers everything

A full men’s wig covers the entire head. No natural hair is visible, which means you avoid the matching problem completely and gain full control over length, color, and hair density.

How to choose

If you have healthy hair growth on the sides and back, a toupee is usually the most natural choice. The transition between your own hair and the hairpiece is softer, and you wear less material on your head.

If your own hair is thin on the sides as well, or if it has a color that is difficult to match, a full wig is both easier and more attractive.

Maintenance

This is where they really differ. A toupee requires you to maintain your own hair around it: the same length, the same color tone, and regular trimming. A wig does not require this kind of coordination, but it does need its own care with products intended for wigs and hairpieces.

Both can be attached with glue or tape if you want them to stay in place all day, and you can find these under glue and tape.

In short

A lot of natural hair remaining: toupee. Little natural hair remaining: wig. If you are unsure which category you fall into, book a free consultation.
