Care tips for human hair wigs
A human hair wig is an investment, and with the right care it lasts a long time and looks natural day after day. Human hair behaves like your own hair – it can be washed, blow-dried, straightened and curled – but because it gets no nourishment from the scalp, it needs moisture and gentle handling. Here we go through how to wash, style and store your human hair wig so you get the most out of it.
How often to wash the wig
Wash the wig once a week to every other week, as needed. If you wear it every day or work out in it, it needs washing more often. Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, and let the water run in the direction of the hair so it does not tangle. Rinse thoroughly so no product residue is left in the hair or the cap.
Moisture, conditioner and oil
Human hair in a wig dries out more easily than your own hair. Moisturize regularly with hair oil or a leave-in conditioner to keep the shine and softness. Apply products to the lengths and ends, not right next to the cap. We have care kits for human hair wigs – one for dark and textured hair and one for light and colored hair – and you will find the full range in our Hair care for human hair wigs collection.
Drying and styling
Gently squeeze out the water with a towel and let the wig air dry on a wig stand so the cap keeps its shape. Human hair can be blow-dried, straightened and curled like your own hair. Always use heat protection before heat styling, and the hair will stay soft and glossy for longer.
Brush gently
Brush the wig gently with a wide-tooth comb or a special wig brush. Always start at the ends and work your way up toward the cap to avoid wear and tangles. Hold the wig at the cap while you brush so the knots and the lace are not strained unnecessarily.
Storage and sleep
Store the wig on a wig stand or in a silk bag, somewhere cool and dry and protected from sun and moisture. That way it keeps its shape and the hair wears less. We recommend taking the wig off when you sleep – friction against the pillow makes the hair tangle and wear faster.
How long does a human hair wig last?
With normal wear, Classic lasts 2–4 months, Premium 3–5 months and Luxury 1–2 years. With the right care, the wig lasts longer. Our Luxury wigs can also be repaired and renewed: we can replace the lace, re-sew the wig or add hair so it gets its fullness back. We always inspect the wig first and tell you what is possible. Common mistakes to avoid
Most damage to a human hair wig comes down to a few habits. Sleeping in the wig, brushing from the cap downward, heat styling without heat protection or applying oil and conditioner right at the cap all wear on both the hair and the lace. Storing the wig in the sun or crushed in a bag also makes it lose its shape. If you avoid these mistakes and follow the routine above, the wig keeps its shine, its shape and its natural look for much longer.
Coloring and cutting the wig
Our human hair can be colored both darker and lighter. We recommend having it done by a stylist with experience of wigs, so both the hair and the lace are treated correctly. The same goes for cutting – a stylist who knows wigs can shape the wig to suit your face and your style.
Glueless and comfortable
All our wigs are glueless and are secured with adjustable straps, so you need neither glue nor tape. The Comfort Cap has no clips or combs, which makes it gentle to wear every day. To learn more about the constructions, read about our wig models.
