Wig support from Nav – how it works
If you're losing your hair because of illness or treatment, you may be entitled to wig support in Norway through the National Insurance Scheme (folketrygden). Here we've gathered what applies and how to go about it.
Who can get support
The support applies if you have lost all or part of your hair due to illness, injury or treatment for an illness. If the hair loss is caused by treatment, it doesn't need to be permanent. There's no age limit.
Support can also be given for gender incongruence, when the need is documented by a doctor or other healthcare professional with the necessary medical expertise and you have lost all or part of your hair.
How much you can get
- Under 30: up to NOK 50 000 per calendar year
- Over 30: up to NOK 6 265 per calendar year
- Custom-fitted wig: up to NOK 16 220 per calendar year, for an atypical head shape or a documented contact allergy to synthetic material
You can get support for one or more wigs per calendar year, depending on your needs. Within the same annual limit you can also get support for a partial wig, a hairpiece, and repairs and maintenance. Instead of a wig, support can be given at the same rate for headwear, hair extensions or hair integration.
The rates change over time. Always check the current rate on nav.no before you order.
How to apply
- Get a medical certificate. The first time you apply, you need a medical certificate describing the cause of your hair loss, how extensive it is and how long it's expected to last. If you've submitted a certificate before, you can say so in your application – Nav will contact you if they need a new one.
- Apply to Nav. If you want to be sure the cost is covered, you can tick the box for prior approval on the application form. You'll then get a decision before you order.
- Choose your wig. You decide which supplier you want to use.
- Get the money. If you paid for the wig yourself, you apply for reimbursement with the original receipt. If you'd rather the supplier invoices Nav directly, you need to sign a power of attorney allowing Nav to pay the supplier directly, and sign to confirm you've received the wig.
You'll receive a written decision once your application has been processed.
You choose your supplier
Nav doesn't tie you to a particular supplier. If you live in Norway and want to buy your wig from us, get in touch before you order and we'll go through what's needed for your application.
What the support doesn't cover
Nav doesn't reimburse shipping, customs or other fees. You cover those costs yourself, wherever you buy your wig.
What we supply on requisition
On requisition (rekvisition) we supply Luxury human hair and vegan synthetic – the same range we recommend for hair loss. If you're paying yourself, you're free to choose from our whole range.
All our wigs are glueless and held in place with adjustable straps – no glue and no tape against your scalp. The constructions that usually fit best with hair loss are Lace Front Plus, Classic Cap, Mono Part and Mono Top.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy my wig from a supplier in Sweden?
You choose your supplier yourself. Get in touch with us before you order and we'll go through the documentation for your application.
Do I have to pay upfront myself?
Not necessarily. If you apply for prior approval and sign a power of attorney, the supplier can invoice Nav directly. Otherwise you pay yourself and apply for reimbursement with the original receipt.
How many wigs can I get support for?
One or more per calendar year depending on your needs, within the annual limit for your age group.
Do I need a new medical certificate every time?
No. A medical certificate is required the first time you apply. If you've submitted one before, you state that in your application, and Nav will contact you if they need a new one.
Does the support also cover hairpieces and hair extensions?
Yes. Within the same annual limit, support can be given for partial wigs and hairpieces, and instead of a wig for headwear, hair extensions or hair integration.
Does the support cover a human hair wig?
The higher rate of NOK 16 220 applies for an atypical head shape or a documented contact allergy to synthetic material. The contact allergy must be documented by a dermatologist or a specialist hospital department. Otherwise the standard annual limit applies, which you can use for any wig you like.
Where can I find the current rates?
On nav.no. The rates are adjusted over time, so check them before you order.
