All hair toppers do the same job: add volume and coverage where your own hair has thinned. The difference lies in the base – the foundation the hair strands are attached to. It determines how natural the parting looks, how cool the hairpiece feels, how much you can style it and what it costs.
We sell four base types. Here's how they differ.
Mono
Monofilament is a fine mesh where every hair is hand-tied. The mesh is translucent, so your own scalp shows through and the hair looks as if it's growing straight out of the skin – whichever way you comb it.
The big advantage is that the parting isn't fixed. You can place it wherever you like within the mono area and change it whenever you want, just like with your own hair.
Suits you if you change your parting, want the most realism on top of the head and wear your topper every day.
Silk
A silk base consists of two layers of fabric with the knots hidden in between. Only the hair strand itself comes through on top, so no knots are visible at all. The parting looks like skin.
It's the most lifelike parting there is. The trade-off is that the base sits slightly higher, feels firmer and is warmer to wear, because it has two layers instead of one.
Suits you if you want the most realistic parting possible and are happy with a fixed parting.
Lace
Lace is a thin, sheer mesh where the strands are tied one by one. It's more breathable than both mono and silk, so your scalp gets more air.
From some angles the knots can show as tiny dark dots, which can be softened by bleaching them. The downside is that it's delicate – the thinner the lace, the more easily it tears.
Suits you if you sweat easily, have a sensitive scalp or want to cover a larger area without it getting warm.

Fishnet
Fishnet is an open, wide-weave mesh. It gives the very best airflow and is the lightest of the four bases – you'll hardly notice it's there.
Because the mesh is open, more of your own hair shows through, so it blends in best when you still have a fair amount of your own hair. If your scalp is very thin, the coverage won't be as complete as with mono or silk.
Suits you if you want volume rather than coverage, work out, or find other toppers warm.

The combination
Our Luxury Hair Topper Deluxe has mono in the parting area and lace all around. That gives you the realistic parting where people look, and the more breathable lace where coverage matters more than appearance. For many people it's the best balance.
How to choose
Start with two questions.
Do you change your parting? If so, go for mono or lace. A silk base has its parting in one set place.
Do you get warm easily? If yes, choose lace or fishnet. Silk is the warmest, mono sits in between.
If it's the front hairline rather than the top of the head that concerns you, you need a different product – read about the Hairline Hair Topper. And if your hair is thin all over the head, a wig is probably a better fit, which we cover in hair topper or wig.
Frequently asked questions
Which base lasts longest?
Silk and mono are the sturdiest, because they have more material. Lace and fishnet are more delicate precisely because they're thinner. With daily wear, a human hair topper usually lasts one to two years whatever the base – how you handle the edge matters more than the choice of base.
Can I heat-style the hair?
Yes, on all our toppers in genuine Remy human hair. Always use heat protection and keep the tool away from the base itself, as direct heat on the mesh or fabric can damage the knots.
Are the knots visible?
On lace they can show as tiny dark dots in harsh light, and they can be bleached. On silk they don't show at all, because they sit between the fabric layers. On mono they're barely visible.
Which base is the coolest?
Fishnet, followed by lace. Silk is the warmest because it has two layers of fabric against the skin.
Can I try before I buy?
Yes. We fit, cut in and colour-match the topper in our salons in Stockholm and Uppsala. Book a free consultation and we'll look at it together.
