Frequently asked questions

Which braids do you do?

Box braids in four sizes, cornrows in two, four or six rows, baby cornrows, ponytail braids, crochet braids and men's braids. We also braid children's hair.

How long does braiding take?

It depends on the size. Small and extra-small box braids often take half a day or more, while a few rows of cornrows take much less time. We'll tell you the time when we book you in.

How long do the braids last?

From a few weeks up to three months, depending on size. Take them out too early rather than too late – a lot of new growth means the braids start to pull under their own weight.

Is the braiding hair included in the price?

Each service states what's included. If you're unsure, ask us when we book you in so you know what to bring.

Do you braid children's hair?

Yes, we have dedicated services for children – box braids and cornrows.

How do I prepare my hair?

Come with freshly washed, dry and detangled hair that's been washed with shampoo only. Conditioner and oils make the hair slippery and weaken the grip when braiding.

How do I wash my hair with braids in?

Focus on the scalp. Mix a gentle shampoo with water in an applicator bottle, apply along the partings, massage with your fingertips and rinse without rubbing the braids.

Why are braids called a protective style?

Your own hair is braided in and spared daily brushing, heat tools and friction against collars. The condition is that the braids aren't too tight and that you look after your scalp.

Should the braids feel tight?

No. A braid should feel secure but not tight. If it pulls at the temples, it's too tight – tell us straight away and we'll loosen a few rows. Hair braided too tightly puts strain on the hairline.

Where is the braiding done?

At both Stockholm and Uppsala. You choose the salon when you add the service to your basket.

Everything you need to know about Braids Stockholm & Uppsala

Braids in Stockholm and Uppsala
At Fairwithhair we braid in both our salons – at Norrtullsgatan 26A by Odenplan in Stockholm and at Skolgatan 49 in Uppsala. We do box braids in four sizes, cornrows with two, four or six braids, classic cornrows, baby cornrows, ponytail braids, crochet braids and braids for men. We also braid children, with dedicated services for kids' box braids, kids' cornrows and kids' two-braid cornrows. All visits are booked in advance, and you choose your salon when you book.

Box braids in four sizes
Box braids are individual braids parted into squares from the scalp and braided with braiding hair for length and volume. Large braids are quicker and feel lighter, while small and extra small braids give a more detailed result and last longer. Box braids last up to two to three months and can be worn down, in a bun or in a high ponytail.

Cornrows
Cornrows are braided close to the scalp in straight or shaped rows and are a clean, classic style for both women and men. Baby cornrows are thinner rows that create a more detailed pattern. We also do two, four or six cornrows with braiding hair fed in for length and fullness – sporty, stylish and quicker to do. They last a few weeks.

Crochet braids, ponytail braid and braids for men
For crochet braids, your own hair is first braided in rows as a base, and ready-made strands are then attached with a crochet needle. It is quicker than braiding each braid by hand and lasts two to three months. The ponytail braid is one long braid in a high or low ponytail. Braids for men are braids for boys and men – tell us how you want them when you book.

African braids and braiding in extensions
Many people search for African braids or braiding in extensions. It is the same family of techniques: your own hair is braided and braiding hair is worked in to add length, thickness and an even braid from root to tip. Which style suits you depends on how long your own hair is, how long you want to keep the braids and how much time you have.

Size decides time and lifespan
The smaller the braids, the longer it takes and the longer the style lasts. Small and extra small box braids often take half a day or more, while a few cornrows are much quicker. Braids last from a few weeks up to three months. We will tell you roughly how long your appointment takes when we book you in.

Braids for children
We braid children in both salons. Children's scalps are more sensitive, so we take extra care with how tight the braids are. Box braids and cornrows make hair easy to manage in everyday life, on holiday and when travelling.

A protective style
When your own hair is braided, it is spared daily brushing, heat and friction and gets to rest. A braid should feel secure but never tight. Tell us straight away if it pulls at your temples and we will redo the rows – braids that are too tight wear on the hairline.

Preparing for your appointment
Come with freshly washed, dry and detangled hair that has been washed with shampoo only. Conditioner and oil make the hair slippery and reduce the grip. If you are unsure about style or size, you can book a free consultation first.

Caring for braids
Wash your scalp about once a week with a mild shampoo diluted in an applicator bottle, and rinse without rubbing the braids. Squeeze out the water in a towel and let the braids dry completely. A light oil soothes itching and a leave-in on the lengths prevents dryness. Sleep with a silk or satin bonnet or pillowcase, and take the braids out sooner rather than later. You will find more tips on our braid care page.
