A human hair wig is an investment, and like all investments, it costs something to maintain. We get this question all the time, but almost no one answers it. Here, we openly calculate what a typical year costs.
Start with what the subsidy does not cover
If you have a requisition from your region, the hair replacement itself, as well as fitting and cutting, is reimbursed up to an amount determined by the region. Maintenance is not. Washing, repairs, shampoo and a wig stand are paid for by you, even with a requisition.
It is good to know this from the start, so the cost does not come as a surprise six months in.
Washing and care
This is the only expense that recurs every year, regardless of how you wear the wig. A professional wash and styling costs SEK 690 with us and includes deep cleaning, removal of glue and tape residue from the hairline, a moisturising treatment and blow-drying.
Most people wash their wigs themselves in between and have a professional treatment a couple of times a year.
Fit and cutting
This is almost always a one-time cost at the beginning, not an annual expense. Custom Fit costs SEK 1,490 and includes adjusting the cap size, sewing in a band if needed, cutting the lace and cutting in the hairstyle to suit your face.
After that, the shape usually lasts until you want to change something yourself.
Wear parts
The elastic band at the nape loses its elasticity after approximately one year of daily use. A new band costs SEK 490 and is the most affordable measure that makes the biggest difference to how the wig fits.
The lace lasts longer, often one to two years with daily use. Replacing a closure or frontal costs SEK 690 in labour, plus the cost of the hairpiece itself.
Products at home
Sulphate-free shampoo, a hair mask and a leave-in cost approximately SEK 600 to 900 per year with daily use. Add a wig stand once, which lasts for years and saves more than it costs.
Three examples
You wear a wig every day. Two professional washes at SEK 1,380, a new band for SEK 490 and products costing approximately SEK 800. Approximately SEK 2,700 per year. Fitting and cutting are added in the first year.
You wear a wig a few times a week. One professional wash at SEK 690 and products costing approximately SEK 500. Approximately SEK 1,200 per year. The band usually lasts two to three years.
You wear a wig on special occasions. One wash every other year and a few products. Under SEK 500 per year, but storage becomes more important because the wig remains unused for long periods.
It can be done more affordably
Our service agreement includes two washes and one restyling over one year for SEK 1,590. Purchased separately, the same services cost SEK 2,070.
The biggest saving is not the discount, though. It is making sure the wig is serviced on time. A human hair wig that is properly cared for lasts for several years. The same wig, left uncared for for six months too long, becomes dry and tangled in a way that can rarely be completely reversed, and by then we are no longer talking about a few hundred kronor.
