A human hair wig is an investment, and like any investment it costs something to maintain. We get asked about this all the time, yet hardly anyone answers it. Here we lay out openly what a normal year adds up to.
Start with what the grant doesn't cover
If you have a requisition (rekvisition) from your Swedish region, the hair replacement itself plus fitting and cutting are covered up to an amount set by the region. Maintenance isn't. Washing, repairs, shampoo and a wig stand are paid by you, even with a requisition.
It's good to know this from the start, so the cost doesn't come as a surprise six months in.
Washing and care
This is the only cost that comes back every year, no matter how you wear your wig. A professional wash and styling costs 690 SEK with us and includes a deep clean, removal of glue and tape residue at the hairline, a moisturising treatment and a blow-dry.
Most people wash the wig themselves in between and book the professional treatment a couple of times a year.
Fit and cut
This is almost always a one-off cost at the start, not a yearly expense. Custom Fit costs 1,490 SEK and includes adjusting the cap size, a sewn-in band if needed, trimming the lace and cutting the style to suit your face.
After that, the shape usually holds until you want to change something yourself.
Parts that wear out
The elastic band at the nape loses its stretch after about a year of daily wear. A new band costs 490 SEK and is the cheapest fix that makes the biggest difference to how the wig sits.
The lace lasts longer, often one to two years with daily wear. Replacing a closure or frontal costs 690 SEK in labour, plus the cost of the hairpiece itself.
Products at home
Sulfate-free shampoo, a hair mask and a leave-in cost roughly 600 to 900 SEK a year with daily use. Add a wig stand once – it lasts for years and saves more than it costs.
Three worked examples
You wear a wig every day. Two professional washes for 1,380 SEK, a new band for 490 SEK and products for around 800 SEK. Roughly 2,700 SEK a year. In the first year, fit and cut come on top.
You wear a wig a few times a week. One professional wash for 690 SEK and products for around 500 SEK. Roughly 1,200 SEK a year. The band usually lasts two to three years.
You wear a wig for special occasions. A wash every other year and a few products. Under 500 SEK a year, but storage becomes more important since the wig sits unused for long periods.
It can be done for less
Our service plan includes two washes and one restyle over a year for 1,590 SEK. Bought separately, the same costs 2,070 SEK.
The biggest saving still isn't the discount. It's that the wig gets serviced on time. A human hair wig that's looked after lasts for several years. The same wig left uncared for six months too long becomes dry and tangled in a way that can rarely be fully restored – and then it's no longer about a few hundred kronor.
