If a keratin treatment gives an uneven result or fades after six weeks instead of four months, the cause is surprisingly often the very first step: the deep cleanse. Your everyday shampoo is designed to cleanse gently and leave conditioning agents behind. Over time, silicones, oils, dry shampoo and limescale build up a thin layer on the hair strand. The keratin can't penetrate that layer, so it sits on top instead. It then doesn't bond to the hair and washes out quickly. Cocochoco Clarifying Shampoo has a deliberately raised pH. That does two things at once: it lifts away build-up and opens the hair's cuticle, so the keratin can be properly absorbed in the next step. Wet your hair thoroughly and massage a generous amount into both hair and scalp. Lather and rinse. Repeat once more – two washes are recommended for the best result. Towel-dry, then blow-dry your hair completely before applying the keratin. This isn't an everyday shampoo. It's used as preparation before a keratin treatment and can be used a couple of times a year to remove heavy build-up. After your treatment, switch straight to sulfate-free shampoo – that's what preserves the result. If you use clarifying shampoo regularly after a treatment, you're effectively washing out your own keratin. Why regular shampoo isn't enough
