Wigs After Chemotherapy – How to Prepare

Peruk efter cellgift – så förbereder du dig

Preparing for hair loss before it starts makes all the difference. Here's what we usually advise our customers to do.

Start before your hair falls out

The most common mistake is waiting. Hair loss after chemotherapy often begins about two to three weeks after the first treatment, and then it happens quickly. If you choose a wig while you still have your own hair, you have something to compare with – the colour, the length, how your fringe used to sit. It's much harder to get it right once your hair is already gone.

Take a few photos of your hair in daylight before treatment starts, straight on and from the side. They're worth their weight in gold when it's time to choose.

Choose a shade lighter than you think

Wig hair looks darker in the light than your own hair does, because it's denser. If you want the wig to resemble the hair you had, it's often wise to go one shade lighter. We offer straight, wavy, curly, Deep Wave, Yaki and Kinky in the same colour chart, so you can match both colour and texture.

Think about your scalp, not just the hair

During treatment the scalp often becomes sensitive. That's when the construction matters more than the look. Lace Front Plus, Klassisk Kupa, Mono Part and Mono Top have soft caps and are usually the most comfortable to wear.

All our wigs are glueless. They stay in place with adjustable straps, with no glue and no tape against the skin. The Comfort Cap also has no clips or combs, which means nothing pulls on your scalp or on the hair you still have.

Human hair or synthetic

Human hair can be heat-styled, styled and coloured like your own and gives the most natural look. Synthetic hair keeps its shape after washing without styling and costs less, but lasts 1–3 months depending on how much it's worn.

Many people choose both: a human hair wig for everyday wear, and a synthetic one for when you're in a hurry or when the first one needs washing.

Support from Nav

If you live in Norway, you may be entitled to financial support for a wig through the National Insurance scheme (folketrygden). If your hair loss is caused by treatment for an illness, it doesn't have to be permanent, and the first time you'll need a medical certificate. You choose your supplier yourself.
