Choosing between a human hair wig and a synthetic wig comes down to feel, styling, care, durability and price. Both can be beautiful – they suit different lives.

Short answer: human hair if you want maximum naturalness and freedom to style, synthetic if you want a ready-made hairstyle with minimal daily care.

Human hair wig

Made from real human hair. It moves softly, falls naturally and feels like your own hair. It can be blow-dried, straightened and curled as long as you use heat protection.

The price of that freedom is care. Wig hair gets no natural oils from a scalp, so all moisture has to be added from the outside – otherwise it dries out and tangles.

Synthetic wig

Made from synthetic fibre that is shaped to hold its style. It's ready to wear straight out of the package and keeps its shape wash after wash.

Regular synthetic fibre can't handle heat at all. Heat-resistant synthetic fibre tolerates up to 120 degrees, which is lower than the default setting on most straighteners – always check the product page.

What looks most natural?

Human hair usually looks the most natural, because it moves and reflects light like regular hair.

But the construction matters at least as much as the fibre. A synthetic wig with a lace front and monofilament can look more real than a cheap human hair wig with a machine-sewn top. We explain the differences in Monofilament, mono top and silk base.

What's easiest to care for?

Synthetic, without a doubt. It keeps its shape after washing and needs no styling.

The same basics apply to both: suitable products, gentle brushing from the ends upwards, lukewarm water when washing, air-drying and storage on a wig stand. More on that in How to make your wig last another year.

Which lasts longest?

Human hair – with the right care, often for several years. A synthetic wig worn every day is more often a one-season item.

Another difference is that human hair can be renovated. Straps, lace and the cap are wear parts that can be replaced, and hair can be knotted in again. A tangled synthetic fibre can't be repaired, only replaced.

What works for hair loss?

Both work. What matters is that the wig is comfortable and fits your everyday life – not what material it's made of.

Many people choose heat-resistant synthetic the first time, especially during treatment when energy is limited, and move on to human hair later. See our medical wigs.

How to choose

Start by measuring the circumference of your head so the fit is right from the start. Then think about how much styling you actually want to do on a regular morning, and how often you'll wear the wig.

Frequently asked questions

Can you feel the difference when you touch the hair?

Yes, most clearly when the hair is freshly washed. Synthetic fibre feels smoother and slightly cooler to the touch, while human hair has more variation strand by strand. From a distance, the difference is much smaller than most people think.

Can you mix – are there wigs with both human hair and synthetic fibre?

Yes, blended fibre exists and usually has human hair at the hairline and synthetic in the rest. It gives a natural hairline at a lower cost, but the two materials need different care, which makes everyday life complicated if you want to keep things simple.

Why does my synthetic wig look shiny?

New synthetic fibre often has a factory shine that looks unnatural in daylight. It fades over time and can be toned down right away with a little dry shampoo lightly over the surface. Avoid oils – they make the fibre heavy and dull instead.
