Fine hair doesn’t need more product. It needs the right product in the right place, and often less than you think. Here are three levels of volume, from what you can do tomorrow morning to what makes the biggest difference.
Level 1: technique
- Blow-dry your hair upside down until it is almost dry, then stand upright
- Part your hair on the opposite side from your usual part - the hair lifts where it is not used to lying
- Use a round brush and direct the air downward from the roots
- Finish with cool air to set the lift
Level 2: products at the roots
All volumizing product should be applied at the roots, never through the lengths - product on the ends only weighs them down.
- KIS Root Volumizer is sprayed along the part on damp hair before blow-drying
- KIS KeraMousse adds structure to hair that lacks body
- KIS Volymgel for hair that needs more hold
- KIS Dry Mud is worked into dry hair when you want matte texture and grip
Level 3: hair fibers and hair toppers
When the scalp starts showing through, styling alone is not enough.
Hair fibers are small keratin fibers that attach to existing hair through static charge and provide instant coverage along the part or at the temples. Fix them afterward with KIS Finishing Spray, which is designed specifically for the fibers and creates a flexible bond with your own hair. Both wash out with your next shampoo.
If you need more than coverage, a human hair topper provides both volume and length where it is needed most, on top of the head, and is attached with small clips to your own hair.
What counteracts volume
- Heavy silicone products through the lengths
- Conditioner applied too close to the scalp
- Washing with water that is too hot, which makes the hair limp
- Using dry shampoo for too many days in a row, which eventually weighs the hair down
Frequently asked questions
Can you see hair fibers if it rains or is windy?
The fibers attach to the hair strands and stay in place in both wind and light rain, especially if you fix them afterward. Heavy rain or heavy sweating can, however, cause them to start running, so for a full day outdoors in bad weather, a hair topper is the safer choice.
What is the difference between a hair topper and a wig?
A hair topper covers only part of the head, usually the area around the part, and allows your own hair to show around it. It suits you if you still have your own hair but lack density. A wig covers the entire head and is the choice when your own hair is very sparse or gone.
Can volumizing styling damage fine hair?
The products themselves do not, but techniques such as backcombing forcefully every day wear down the cuticle, and fine hair has less tolerance than coarse hair. Choose lift at the roots instead of backcombing, and give your hair a break from strong-hold products a few days a week.
