Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner - why they are a must after keratin

That a keratin treatment requires sulfate-free hair care is not a sales pitch. It is the reason some people maintain the result for five months while others do so for six weeks.

What sulfates do

Sulfates are powerful cleansing agents, most often sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. They dissolve oil effectively, which is beneficial in a regular shampoo. The problem is that they do not distinguish between dirt and the proteins added to the hair shaft. Every wash with sulfate shampoo removes some of the keratin.

Sodium chloride, or regular salt, has a similar effect and is commonly used as a thickening agent in inexpensive shampoos. That is why Cocochoco sulfate-free shampoo is free from sulfates, parabens, and sodium chloride.

Why the conditioner is also needed

The shampoo protects the treatment; the conditioner maintains it. Cocochoco sulfate-free conditioner counteracts dryness and static electricity, precisely the two things that make frizz return first. How to read the ingredients list

Look for sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, and sodium chloride. If any of them appear high up on the list, the product is unsuitable for you as long as you have a keratin treatment in your hair.
