Keratin bonds and nail hair – how the method works

Keratin bonds, also called nail hair, are the method that gives you the most freedom of movement. The hair is applied in individual strands, so you can wear it up any way you like without anything showing.

How it works

Each strand has a small keratin tip. The tip is warmed briefly and shaped around a thin section of your own hair. Once it has cooled, the bond is secure and feels like a tiny knot at the root.

Keratin is the same protein your hair is made of, and the bond is soft rather than hard. That is why you rarely notice it against your pillow.

Who it suits

• You want to wear your hair in a high updo without the bonds showing
• You want length, not just volume
• Your hair is fine and slippery, so tape struggles to stay in place
• You want many small bonds that move with your hair

When we recommend something else

• Hair that can't take heat. The method uses heat during installation, if only briefly. If your hair needs a complete break from heat, micro weft or Mesh is a better choice.
• A sensitive or tender scalp. Lots of individual bonds require a healthy scalp.
• Very fragile natural hair. Each bond is carried by just a few strands, so your hair needs enough strength to hold it.

Move-up

Keratin bonds last the longest of all our methods – roughly every three to four months they need to be removed and reapplied. Don't wait longer than that: once the bonds have grown out, they start to tangle into each other, and removal then takes longer and costs more hair.

Care

• Separate the bonds with your fingers every evening for the first few weeks
• Brush two to three times a day, starting at the ends and working up
• Apply conditioner and masks from ear level down, never on the bonds
• Sleep with your hair in a loose braid

Keratin softens with heat, so be careful with flat irons near the root and keep the hairdryer at a distance from the bonds.
