Hair extensions – compare all methods

Hair extensions come in many techniques – from permanent methods that are sewn in, taped or bonded with keratin, to removable hairpieces you put in and take out yourself. Which method suits you depends on how thick your own hair is, how long you want the attachment to last and how much maintenance you want.

Fairwithhair's hair extension methods

Fixed methods

Sew-in & Weft hair

Sew-in is a hair extension method where the extensions are attached by sewing a weft onto a cornrow close to the scalp. The method is completely free from glue, heat and chemicals and never acts directly on your own hair strands.

What?
Sewn onto a cornrow, glue-free
Who?
Suits fine to thick hair
How long?
Lasts 2–3 months, then a move-up
Pros/cons?
Gentle, but can feel tight

Tape-in extensions

Tape-in extensions are a hair extension method where thin, pre-taped wefts are attached in a sandwich layer around your own hair. They lie flat against the head and are almost invisible, even in fine hair.

What?
Taped strands, attached in pairs
Who?
Suits fine to normal hair
How long?
Lasts 8–10 weeks, then re-taped
Pros/cons?
Discreet and flat, but needs more frequent maintenance

Micro weft

Micro weft is a hair extension method where a thin weft is attached with small micro rings close to the scalp – with no sewing, glue or heat. The attachments are small, and the weft lies flat and discreet in normal to thick hair.

What?
Thin weft, attached with micro rings
Who?
Suits normal to thick hair
How long?
Lasts 2–3 months, then a move-up
Pros/cons?
Discreet and glue-free, but contains nickel

Keratin Extensions – Nail Hair

Nail Hair is a hair extension method where individual strands are attached with a keratin tip that is melted around your own hair using heat. The bonds are small and flexible, so you can wear your hair up and style it completely freely.

What?
Keratin bond, melted on with heat
Who?
Suits normal to thick, healthy hair
How long?
Lasts 3–4 months, then reinstalled
Pros/cons?
Lasts longest and is invisible, but requires heat and a long installation

Butterfly Weft

Butterfly Weft is a hair extension method where an extra-thin weft with pre-punched holes is attached with micro rings close to the scalp – with no sewing, glue or heat. The attachment is so thin and soft you can barely feel it, while still giving full volume all the way to the ends.

What?
Thin weft, attached with micro rings through the holes
Who?
Suits fine to normal hair, sensitive scalps
How long?
Lasts 1–2 months, then a move-up
Pros/cons?
Extra comfortable and flat, but requires an experienced stylist
Braids & weave

Full Weave with leave out

Full Weave is a hair extension method where the whole head is braided into cornrows and wefts are sewn over them, while a thin section of your own hair is left out at the top. The leave out is laid over the attachments and gives a completely natural-looking root area and parting.

What?
Almost all hair braided, weft sewn on, own hair on top
Who?
Suits normal to thick hair
How long?
Lasts about 3 months, then redone
Pros/cons?
Biggest transformation and a natural top, but the leave out must be heat-styled to blend

Weave with Closure / Frontal

Weave with a closure or frontal is a hair extension method where the whole head is braided into cornrows and fully covered with wefts, with a lace piece finishing the top. A closure covers the middle of the head while a frontal goes from ear to ear, and both give a natural parting without leaving any of your own hair out.

What?
Weft sewn onto cornrows, closure/frontal on top
Who?
Suits all hair types, even fine and fragile hair
How long?
Lasts 2–3 months, then re-sewn
Pros/cons?
Fully protects all your own hair, but the lace needs proper care

Braids – box braids, cornrows and more

Braids are a hair extension method where extension hair is braided into your own hair and stays in as a hairstyle for several weeks. Depending on the technique, the hair is braided either free-hanging or as cornrows close to the head, but the principle is the same – no glue, no heat.

What?
Extensions braided in from the root, free or as cornrows
Who?
Suits all hair types
How long?
Lasts 3 weeks–3 months
Pros/cons?
Protective and low-maintenance, but takes several hours to install

Crochet

Crochet is a hair extension method where extension hair is hooked into cornrows with a crochet hook instead of being sewn or braided in. The hair goes in as ready-made strands, which makes installation much faster than regular braids.

What?
Hair hooked into cornrows with a crochet hook
Who?
Suits all hair types
How long?
Lasts 2–3 months, then reinstalled
Pros/cons?
Quick and protective, but the attachments can show if the base is sparse
Removable pieces

Halo Hairband

Halo is a hair extension method where the extension hair sits on an invisible wire that is placed over the head like a band, with or without small clips for extra hold. The wire is completely hidden by a thin layer of your own hair laid over it.

What?
Invisible wire over the head, with or without clips
Who?
Suits all hair types, even fragile or fine hair
How long?
Removed daily
Pros/cons?
Almost no tension and takes seconds, but gives less volume than permanent methods

Clip on set

Clip-on is a hair extension method where ready-made wefts with small clips are attached to your own hair in a few minutes. You put the set in and take it out entirely yourself – no salon visit and no permanent attachment.

What?
Wefts with clips that click in place
Who?
Suits all hair types and anyone who wants temporary volume
How long?
Removed every evening
Pros/cons?
Completely gentle and flexible, but not for overnight wear or workouts

Ponytail

A ponytail is a removable hairpiece that wraps around your own ponytail and adds length and fullness in seconds. Nothing is attached at the scalp, and you take it off whenever you like.

What?
Hairpiece that wraps around your ponytail
Who?
Suits all hair types
How long?
Removed daily
Pros/cons?
Instant effect with no attachment in your own hair, but only works with hair worn up
Hair loss

Mesh Integration

Mesh Integration is a hair extension method where a thin, breathable net is attached to the scalp and extension hair is sewn onto the net. Your own hair is pulled up through the net and blended with the extensions, giving volume without putting any tension on your own hair strands.

What?
Net attached to the scalp, hair sewn onto the net
Who?
Suits fine hair and hair loss
How long?
Lasts 8–10 weeks, then reinstalled
Pros/cons?
Fully protects all your own hair, but the net needs care

Hair Topper

A hair topper is a hairpiece placed over the top of the head that adds volume exactly where the hair has thinned. It clips into your own hair with small clips and takes only a minute to put in.

What?
Small hairpiece with clips
Who?
Suits anyone with thinning hair or hair loss
How long?
Removed daily
Pros/cons?
Quick and gentle solution, but only covers the top

Wig

A wig is a method where the hair is worn as a complete hairpiece over your own hair instead of being attached to it. Your own hair is braided or pinned flat underneath, and the wig is held in place with adjustable straps and clips – all our wigs are glueless.

What?
Complete hairpiece, worn over your own hair without glue
Who?
Suits everyone, including hair loss or very thin hair
How long?
Removed daily
Pros/cons?
Total freedom and protects all your own hair, but needs the right fit

Where is it attached?

The four groups of methods attach in different ways – this is where each one sits.

Fixed methods

Fixed methods

Attached in the salon to your own hair close to the scalp – sewn to a braid, with microrings, tape or keratin – and worn day and night until it is time to move up.

Braids & weave

Braids & weave

Your own hair is first braided flat into cornrows. The extensions are then sewn, braided or hooked onto the braids, which protect your hair throughout.

Removable pieces

Removable pieces

Put in and taken out by yourself – with clips, an invisible wire or around your ponytail. Nothing stays in your hair overnight.

Hair loss

Hair loss

Covers thin areas or the whole head: a hair topper or wig is worn over your own hair, while mesh is attached as a fine net at the scalp.

Hair extension methods – how to choose the right technique

Hair extensions come in many techniques – from permanent methods that are sewn in, taped or bonded with keratin, to removable hairpieces you put in and take out yourself. Which hair extension method suits you best depends on how thick your own hair is, how long you want the attachment to last and how much time you want to spend on maintenance.

Permanent methods that last for several months

Permanent methods are installed in the salon and stay in around the clock until it is time for a move-up. A sew-in (weft hair) is attached by sewing a weft onto a cornrow close to the head – with no glue or heat, which makes it one of the gentlest methods for fine to thick hair. Micro weft and butterfly weft are instead attached with small micro rings close to the scalp, with no sewing, glue or heat. Micro weft works best in normal to thick hair, while butterfly weft has an extra-thin attachment that makes it a better choice if you have fine hair or a sensitive scalp.

Tape-in extensions are attached in a sandwich layer around your own hair and lie flat against the head, which makes the method discreet even in fine hair – however, they need re-taping roughly every eight to ten weeks. Nail hair (keratin extensions/bonding) is attached strand by strand with a keratin tip that is melted on with heat. It is the longest-lasting and most freely moving of our methods, but it requires healthy hair of your own and more time in the chair.

Braid-based methods and weaves

Braid-based techniques protect your own hair by braiding it down before the extensions are attached. A full weave with leave out gives maximum length and volume while a section of your own hair is left out at the top for a natural parting. A weave with a closure or frontal instead covers the whole head and is finished with a lace piece on top, fully protecting all your own hair and giving an invisible hairline.

Braids – box braids, knotless braids, cornrows and twists – are hair extensions where the extension hair is braided into your own hair and stays in as a hairstyle for several weeks. Crochet builds on the same base but is quicker to install, as ready-made strands are hooked into already braided cornrows with a crochet hook.

Removable hairpieces you put in yourself

If you would rather skip salon visits, there are methods you control entirely yourself. A clip-on set clicks in within minutes and comes out in the evening. The halo hairband sits on an invisible wire over the head, with or without small clips, and a ponytail wraps around a ready-made ponytail for instant length. What all three have in common is that they put hardly any strain on the hair – the trade-off is that they do not stay in overnight or during workouts.

Solutions for thinning hair and hair loss

With hair loss and very thin hair, regular hair extensions are rarely enough. A hair topper is a smaller hairpiece that covers the top of the head, where hair usually thins the most, while a wig covers the whole head and gives complete freedom no matter how much of your own hair remains. Mesh integration is somewhere in between: a thin net is attached to the scalp and extension hair is sewn onto the net without putting any tension on your own hair strands.

Which hair extension method should you choose?

If you have fine hair, a sew-in, tape-in extensions or butterfly weft work best – a sew-in spreads the weight along the whole cornrow, and tape and butterfly weft have small attachments that lie flat. If you have normal to thick hair, you can choose freely between sew-in, micro weft, nail hair and weave. If you want maximum flexibility with no commitment, clip-on, halo hairband or ponytail is the way to go, and if you live with hair loss, a hair topper, wig or mesh integration are the safest options.

Whatever the method, the hair quality determines the result. Real remy hair keeps the cuticles aligned in the same direction, so the hair stays soft, tangles less and can be coloured and heat-styled just like your own. If you are unsure which method suits your hair, we are happy to help you choose at a free consultation.
