Butterfly weft is one of the easiest methods to install yourself. The weft has pre-punched holes and is attached with micro rings, so you don't need a needle and thread, glue or heat. Here we go through the whole installation step by step.
What you need
- Butterfly weft in your colour and length
- Micro rings in a shade that matches your own hair
- A micro ring plier with hook
- A comb for straight partings and a few hair clips to section your hair
- Scissors, if you want to cut the weft to width
Prepare your hair
Start with clean, dry hair with no mask or oil in the lengths, otherwise the rings will slip. Detangle thoroughly and clip up the top layer so you only work on one section at a time. Plan where the rows will go: the lowest a few centimetres above the nape hairline, then one row at a time upwards, with a couple of centimetres between rows.
Step by step
- Section a straight line. Comb out a thin, straight parting and clip up the hair above. The line must be straight all the way, otherwise the weft will sit crooked.
- Measure and cut the weft. Hold the weft against your head and cut it to width so it ends a couple of centimetres from the hairline on each side. Butterfly weft doesn't shed when cut.
- Pull the hair through the holes. Place the weft just below the parting and use the hook to pull a strand of hair through the hole, in the direction your hair grows. Do the same with a strand from the other side, through the neighbouring hole. Take the right amount of hair – too much weighs it down, too little slips out.
- Lock with two rings. The two micro rings meet between the holes and are clamped together into one attachment with the plier. The attachment should sit a few millimetres from the scalp, never right against it.
- Work your way along the row. Repeat at even intervals along the whole weft. If you have fine hair, add more attachments so the weight is spread evenly instead of resting on a few points.
- Let your hair down and check. Release the section above and check that the weft is fully covered. Gently tug the weft – it should feel secure without pulling on your scalp.
How many rows do you need?
Each pack contains 50 grams. For thickening alone, 50 to 100 grams – one to two rows – is often enough. If you want both length and fullness, most people use 150 to 200 grams spread over three to four rows. It is better to start with too little and add a row than the other way round.
Common mistakes
- Crooked partings. If the line isn't straight, the weft will show when you wear your hair up.
- Too few attachments. Then all the weight ends up on a few points, which wears on your own hair.
- Products on the attachments. Conditioner and masks belong in the lengths, not at the rings.
Move-up and removal
Your hair grows out and the attachments move down, so the weft needs a move-up every two to three months. For a move-up, you open the rings with the plier, remove the weft and reinstall it closer to the scalp. The hair is reused – only the rings are replaced.
Colouring and care
The hair is human hair and can be coloured both darker and lighter. Let a hairdresser do the colouring and test on a small section of hair first so the result is even. Otherwise, brush gently from the ends up, wash with mild, moisturising products and sleep with your hair in a loose braid.
