Barnperuk vid håravfall – vad föräldrar behöver veta

When a child starts losing their hair, the questions come fast and all at once. Will people notice? Will it survive a PE class? What does it cost? Here we've gathered what we most often go through with parents during a consultation.

Human hair or synthetic

The industry almost always puts children in synthetic wigs, and the reason is practical: a synthetic wig keeps its style after washing and needs no styling. But a synthetic wig only lasts 1–3 months, and a child who wears a wig every day will wear it out within a school term.

A wig in Luxury human hair, on the other hand, lasts 1–2 years and can be repaired and refreshed after around 7–9 months. That's why we build our children's range on human hair and offer synthetic as an extra wig alongside it – handy to have while the other one is being washed.

The construction matters more than the style

For a child with a bald or sensitive scalp, the way the wig is secured decides whether it gets worn or ends up in a drawer. Many wigs are held in place with clips and combs that grip the wearer's own hair. If there's no hair left, they grip the skin instead.

Our children's wigs have a Comfort Cap: no clips, no combs, just adjustable straps and a thin edge. At the front sits a half lace, Lace Front Plus, which gives a soft hairline and holds even when the hair is pulled up into a ponytail. The wig is glueless and needs neither glue nor tape.

Everyday life: school, PE, swimming

The question we hear most is whether the wig stays on. It does during normal play and movement. For sports and more active play, we recommend a wig grip band underneath, which adds extra hold without itching.

Swimming is a topic of its own. Chlorinated water is harsh on human hair, and many children prefer a swim cap or a turban at the pool. It's worth talking it through in advance, so it doesn't come as a surprise in the middle of a swimming lesson.

Size and measuring

Children's sizes are around 50–52 cm measured around the head – along the hairline at the forehead, above the ears and down to the nape of the neck. Measure twice if you can. At the consultation we measure together and adjust the cap on the spot.

Let your child choose

This is the advice we give most often, and the one that matters most. A child who has chosen the length, texture and style themselves wears the wig completely differently from a child who had it chosen for them. Let your child decide, even if their choice isn't the one you would have made.

The cost

In Sweden, children with significant hair loss can receive a requisition (rekvisition) from their Swedish region. The amounts are often higher for children than for adults, but vary between regions. We are an approved supplier in all 21 regions.

You don't have to decide right away

Our consultation is free of charge, takes as long as it needs and never ends with pressure to buy. Many families come back a second time before deciding, and that's completely fine. Call us on 0764 15 90 00 and we'll book a time in Stockholm or Uppsala.
