Requisitions for children's wigs – how the funding works

Rekvisition för barnperuk – så fungerar bidraget

Many parents get in touch with the same question: do we have to pay for the wig ourselves? In Sweden there's regional funding for hair replacement, and for children it's often higher than for adults. Here we explain how it works in practice.

What a requisition is

A requisition (rekvisition) is a voucher issued by your Swedish region, which you hand in at the salon instead of paying yourselves. The salon then invoices the region. It's the treating specialist doctor who assesses whether your child is entitled to funding and who writes the requisition – a GP at the health centre usually can't do it.

When funding can be granted

Funding is granted for significant or total hair loss caused by illness or treatment. Common causes include alopecia areata, alopecia totalis or universalis, congenital hair defects, hair loss after chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and hair loss after surgery or an accident.

The amounts differ between regions

There's no national amount. Region Stockholm provides up to 9 500 SEK per twelve-month period for children, compared with 7 000 SEK for adults. Other regions have different levels, and some give children exactly the same amount as adults. The rules also change over time.

So always check what applies in your own region, through 1177 or through the clinic that writes the requisition. We're happy to help you make sense of the decision.

Don't order online with a requisition

This is the most common mistake. Several regions state explicitly that funding is not paid for hair replacement ordered online. A purchase with a requisition must therefore be made with an approved supplier, in person at the salon.

We are an approved supplier in all 21 regions and accept requisitions in both Stockholm and Uppsala.

What the funding covers – and what it doesn't

The funding covers the wig itself and, in many regions, the fitting too. It normally doesn't cover care products such as shampoo and conditioner, washing or reconditioning, or replacement of a lost or damaged wig. If the wig costs more than the funding, you pay the difference yourselves.

How it works with us

  1. The specialist doctor assesses the need and writes the requisition, which is sent to your home.
  2. You call us on 0764 15 90 00 and book a free consultation in Stockholm or Uppsala.
  3. We measure, fit and cut the wig together with your child.
  4. You hand the requisition to us, and we invoice the region.

It's a good idea to make a copy of the requisition before you hand it in. The requisition is only valid in Sweden.

A requisition isn't just for wigs

In several regions, the requisition can also be used for hair extensions, false eyelashes and cosmetic eyebrow tattooing. The rules and amounts differ, so ask the prescribing doctor exactly what your requisition covers.
