Scalp Protector – hudskydd för peruk

Itching under a wig is one of the most common reasons people stop wearing one. It's also one of the problems that can most often be solved, once you know what's causing it. The cause almost always lies in one of three things: friction, moisture or materials.

Friction

A wig that slides back and forth rubs against the skin all day. The itch then feels diffuse, comes and goes, and you notice it most in the afternoon.

The solution isn't another cream but a wig that stays put. If yours moves around, the fit is what needs fixing first – we go through that in Wig slipping?. A thin wig cap underneath also reduces the rubbing straight away.

Moisture and heat

Under a wig, both temperature and humidity rise. Sweat that stays against the skin causes an itch that feels burning rather than prickly, and it gets worse in warm rooms.

Three things make a big difference: a breathable cap, a cotton or bamboo wig cap that absorbs moisture, and taking the wig off for a while at some point in the day. An hour without the wig in the evening goes a long way for most people.

The material against your skin

If the itch is sharp and limited to one area – often along the hairline or at the nape – it's more often about what's touching the skin than about heat.

Common culprits are glue and tape, the combs on the inside, the edge of the elastic band and machine seams in a stiff cap. A cap with a soft inside, or a monofilament cap where the hair is knotted into a fine mesh instead of sewn into wefts, feels noticeably gentler on skin that's already irritated.

When your skin is extra sensitive

During and after medical treatment, skin reacts more easily than usual. Then simpler rules apply: no glue, no tape, a soft inside and a wig held in place with a band instead.

Many people also alternate between a wig and a turban during that period, so the skin gets a rest without going without anything. What feels good on tender skin, and which seams chafe, we cover in our guide to headwear during cancer treatment. For the night, there are soft sleep caps in silk and satin.

When to act straight away

Itching that persists, redness that doesn't settle overnight, sores or flaking are not something to put up with or try to style away. Take the wig off and contact your doctor or nurse, especially if you need to wear a wig every day. We can adjust a wig, but we can't assess skin.

Help with the wig itself

If the wig is the problem, it can usually be fixed. Size and band are adjusted with Custom Fit, and a cap that has become stiff or worn on the inside can be replaced entirely with Cap Renewal, keeping the hair.

Frequently asked questions

Can you be allergic to a wig?

The hair itself rarely causes reactions. What's usually behind it is glue, tape or dyed materials in the cap. If you suspect a reaction, stop using the product and have it assessed by a healthcare professional – don't try to work it out by trial and error.

Does shaving your head help if you wear a wig every day?

It's a personal choice, not a requirement. Some find it cooler and smoother, others find that stubble causes more itchy friction than soft hair. If you still have your own hair, it usually works best flattened or braided under a wig cap.

What should you do if wig glue makes your skin red?

Stop using the glue immediately and remove the residue with a suitable remover, never by scrubbing. Wear the wig with a band until the skin has calmed down. If the redness comes back, you need a different attachment method, not a different glue.
