Clip-on hair extensions: when do they suit you and how do you use them?
Clip-on hair extensions are a flexible way to get longer, fuller or more styled hair without a permanent extension method. They attach to your own hair with small clips and can be put in and taken out whenever you like.
They're perfect for parties, photo shoots, weddings or whenever you want a little extra volume in everyday life.
What are clip-on hair extensions?
Clip-on hair extensions are hair wefts with small clips that attach close to the scalp. Unlike tape, keratin or sew-in extensions, they don't need to be installed by a stylist.
You can use clip-on to add length, volume or a temporary change without committing to a permanent method.
Who are clip-on extensions for?
Clip-on suits you if you want to wear hair extensions sometimes, but not all the time. They're a great way to try extensions, create a party hairstyle or add extra fullness for special occasions.
If your hair is very fine or fragile, choose a lighter set so the clips don't feel heavy.
Benefits of clip-on
Clip-on extensions are easy to use at home, need no salon appointment and can be taken out at the end of the day.
They give you quick volume and length without glue, tape or heat to attach them. Because they aren't in your hair all the time, they can also cause less wear than permanent extensions.
Drawbacks to consider
Clip-on works best for temporary wear. You need to take them out before you sleep, and they can feel heavy if your hair is very fine.
It also takes a bit of practice to place the clips correctly so they don't show.
How to put in clip-on extensions
Start with dry, brushed hair. Divide your hair into sections from the nape of the neck upwards.
Attach the clips close to the scalp, starting with the middle clip and working out towards the sides. Once everything is in place, gently brush your own hair together with the extensions and style them together.
How to get a natural result
Choose the right colour, length and thickness. Clip-on looks most natural when it matches your own hair and sits under enough of your hair. Compare the shades in our colour chart.
If needed, the extensions can be cut in for a softer blend.
Caring for clip-on hair extensions
Brush the hair after each wear, always starting at the ends. Only wash when needed and use moisturising hair care for extensions.
Use heat protection when styling and store your clip-on extensions dry and protected, ideally in a bag, a box or on a hanger.
Clip-on or permanent hair extensions?
Clip-on is best for temporary volume and styling. Permanent hair extensions are a better fit if you want longer or fuller hair every day.
The choice depends on how often you want to wear extensions and the result you're after.
