After a summer of sun, swimming and heat, the attachments rarely sit as neatly as they did in June. Your hair has grown out, the colour may have faded and the ends often need a trim. Autumn is the most common time of year for a move-up at our salon.
What a move-up involves
We take out your hair extensions, clean your own hair and reinstall the extensions closer to the scalp. Your own hair grows about a centimetre a month, and once the attachments have slipped too far down they're easier to spot and put more strain on your hair than they should. Most methods need a move-up every six to ten weeks, but it depends on how fast your hair grows and which method you have.
We check the condition of your hair at the same time
Salt and chlorine dry out both your own hair and your extensions, and blonde hair often turns warmer or slightly green after weeks by the pool. We wash with the right product, give you a treatment if needed and tone where necessary so the colour blends evenly with your own hair again.
This is also when you'll notice whether the hair itself needs replacing. Real human hair extensions last a long time with good care, but after a year of heat styling and sun the ends can feel thin. Often it's enough to add a few new strands or hair wefts at the bottom instead of replacing everything.
We recommend booking your move-up before the dark autumn evenings send everyone in at once. November and December are our busiest months.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know it's time for a move-up?
When you can clearly feel the attachments with your fingers, see them in your parting, or your hair starts to tangle closer to the scalp. It often also shows as your hair feeling heavier than usual.
Can I reuse the same hair after the move-up?
Yes, in most cases. We clean the hair, remove anything that's worn and reinstall the rest. How many times this works depends on quality and care.
Do I need to book more time for a move-up than for a new installation?
No, a move-up usually takes less time than a new installation because the hair has already been selected and colour-matched. If you'd like a cut or toning at the same time, you book that as an add-on.
