For many families, the first day of school with a wig is the part that feels hardest. The wig itself is rarely the problem – it is everything around it that needs preparing. Here is what we usually go through with families before the school year starts.
Start before term begins
Let the child wear the wig at home for a few weeks first. That way it has time to feel like their own, rather than something new on the same day all their classmates see it. Try it in motion too: cycling, running, hanging upside down on a sofa.
Decide together what to say
Children get asked questions, and it hurts less when the answer is already prepared. Some children want to say exactly how it is. Others want one short sentence and to move on. Both work. What matters is that the child decided for themselves and does not have to invent something on the spot.
Talk to the school in advance
A short conversation with the class teacher before term makes a real difference. The teacher needs to know three things: that the child wears a wig, how the child wants it handled in class, and who the child can go to if something feels difficult. Bring up gym lessons and the changing room specifically.
Sports and recess
Our children's wigs have a Comfort Cap with no clips or combs, plus half lace at the front. That holds well day to day. For sports we still recommend a wig grip band underneath for extra security – mostly for the child's own sake, so that wondering whether it is still in place does not take up room in the middle of a football match.
Have a plan for hot days
It gets warm under a wig. A thin cotton cap underneath absorbs moisture and makes a difference. Many children also want a turban or a beanie in their bag as an alternative, so they can switch if they want to. Having the choice often matters more than using it.
A second wig makes life easier
Human hair is washed once a week to every other week and needs to air dry. An extra wig in vegan synthetic covers those days, and keeps its style after washing with no styling needed – handy on a morning when everyone is in a hurry.
The morning routine
Brush the wig in the evening rather than in the morning, and store it on a wig stand overnight. It keeps its shape and the morning gets shorter. It sounds small, but it is the tip parents thank us for most afterwards.
