For many families, the first day of school with a wig is what feels hardest. The wig itself is rarely the problem – it's everything around it that needs preparing. Here's what we usually go through with families before school starts.
Start before term begins
Let your child wear the wig at home for a few weeks first. That way it has time to feel like their own, rather than something new on the same day all their classmates see it. Try it out on the move too: cycling, running, hanging upside down on the sofa.
Decide together what to say
Children get asked questions, and it hurts less when the answer is already ready. Some children want to say it as it is. Others want one short sentence and then move on. Both work. What matters is that your child has decided for themselves and doesn't have to make something up on the spot.
Talk to the school in advance
A short conversation with the class teacher before term starts makes a big difference. The teacher needs to know three things: that your child wears a wig, how your child would like it handled in class, and who they can turn to if something feels difficult. Bring up PE lessons and the changing room specifically, too.
PE and break time
Our children's wigs have a Comfort Cap with no clips or combs, plus half lace at the front. That sits well day to day. For PE we still recommend a wig grip band under the wig for extra security – mostly for your child's own peace of mind, so that wondering whether it will stay put doesn't take up space in the middle of a football match.
Have a plan for hot days
It gets warm under a wig. A thin cotton cap underneath absorbs moisture and makes a difference. Many children also like to keep a turban or a hat in their bag as an alternative, so they can switch if they want to. Having the choice is often more important than using it.
A spare wig makes life easier
Human hair is washed once a week to once every two weeks and needs to air-dry. A spare wig in vegan synthetic hair covers those days, and it also keeps its style after washing without any styling – handy on a morning when you're in a rush.
The morning routine
Brush the wig in the evening instead of the morning, and keep it on a wig stand overnight. That way it holds its shape and mornings get shorter. It sounds small, but it's the tip parents most often thank us for afterwards.
