When the heating is on full blast, indoor humidity drops sharply. Hair extensions feel it straight away: they get static, lose their shine and tangle more easily than in summer.
Why hair extensions are hit hardest
Your own hair gets moisture and oil from the scalp. Hair extensions get nothing – everything has to be added. Dry winter air draws out whatever moisture is there, and then the strands start to fly away.
Five things that help
- A leave-in every day, even on days you don't wash
- A drop of oil in your palms, worked through the lengths – never near the bonds
- Switch to a wooden or nylon brush; plastic charges the hair
- A deep-conditioning treatment every other week instead of once a month
- A humidifier in the bedroom does more good than you'd think
Quick fix for static hair
Lightly dampen your hands with water and smooth them over your hair, or spritz a little leave-in into the air and walk through it. Avoid drying hairsprays – they solve the problem for ten minutes and then make it worse.
Wool and friction
Wool scarves rough up the surface of the hair. A silk scarf next to the hair, or wearing your hair outside your collar, makes a big difference over a whole winter.
