With hair extensions you have more hair to put up – and ideally the bonds should not show. With the right clip size and the right placement, you can wear your hair up without tape, keratin or weft showing. Here is what we tell our customers in the salon.

Choose a clip that holds all your hair

Hair extensions add more volume than your own hair, so the clip needs to be larger than you are used to. For a full updo with hair extensions we recommend XL at 13 cm. If your hair is shorter or you only have a few wefts, L may be enough.

How to hide the bonds

  1. Brush through your hair from the ends upward, and hold at the bonds so you do not pull on them.
  2. Twist your hair upward instead of pulling it tightly back. Your own hair then falls over the bonds.
  3. Place the clip a little higher than usual, above the top row of bonds.
  4. Check with a hand mirror that no tape edges or wefts show at the nape.

Do not clamp the clip over the bonds

Let the teeth of the clip grip the hair – not directly over tape, keratin bonds or weft. The bonds do best when they are not squeezed or bent, and the clip also holds better in hair than in bonds.

Half-up – the easiest style with hair extensions

If you want to play it safe, choose a half-up style. Take the hair from the temples and up toward the top of your head and fasten it with a clip in M or L. The lower hair, where the bonds sit, hangs freely and covers everything.

Be gentle when you take the clip out

Open the clip fully before you take it out, so no hairs get caught. Never sleep with the clip in – if you want your hair up overnight, a soft hair tie or a loose braid is gentler on both your own hair and the hair extensions.

See all sizes in Hair Clips or choose Hair Clip Vardag in XL, which we developed for lots of hair and hair extensions. Not sure about the size? Read Hair clip for thick hair – how to choose the right size.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a hair clip with hair extensions?

Yes. Choose a clip that holds all your hair, usually XL, and place it above the bonds.

Which size should I choose with hair extensions?

XL at 13 cm for a full updo. L is often enough for half-up or if you have few wefts.

Does the hair clip damage the tape or keratin bonds?

Not if the clip grips the hair and is not clamped directly over the bonds.

How do I hide the bonds when my hair is up?

Twist your hair upward instead of pulling it tight, and place the clip higher than usual.

Can I sleep with a hair clip in?

No, take it out before you go to sleep. A soft hair tie or a loose braid is gentler overnight.
