Tape is the fastest of our methods and the one that shows least in fine hair. It doesn't suit everyone, but for the right hair type it's hard to beat.
How it works
The hair sits on thin strips with an adhesive surface. Two strips are placed against each other with a thin section of your own hair in between, so the bond lies flat. No rings, no heat, nothing that builds height.
That's why tape sits so close to the head that you barely feel it, and why it works so well in fine hair where other bonds would stand out.
Who it suits
- Fine to normal hair
- You want volume rather than maximum length
- You want the installation to be quick
- You wear your hair down or half up
When we recommend something else
- Very thick hair. It takes many strips to get even density, and then weft is more efficient.
- An oily scalp. Sebum near the roots is tape's biggest enemy.
- A high ponytail every day. The strips can show in high updos.
Maintenance
Tape needs moving up roughly every one to two months – more often than most other methods, because the strips become visible sooner as the hair grows out. The hair can be reused; it's the strips that are replaced.
What decides how long it stays put
Tape almost always comes loose for the same reason: products. Oils, silicones and heavy masks break down the adhesive.
- Keep the top few centimetres free of oil and conditioner
- Dry the hair properly at the roots
- Don't sleep with wet hair
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo
