Volym i tunt hår: styling, hårfiber och hårdel

Fine hair doesn't need more product. It needs the right product in the right place – and often less than you'd think. Here are three levels of volume, from what you can do tomorrow morning to what gives the biggest effect.

Level 1: technique

  • Blow-dry your hair upside down until it's almost dry, then stand up
  • Part your hair on the opposite side from usual – it lifts where it isn't used to lying
  • Use a round brush and direct the airflow downwards from the roots
  • Finish with cool air to set the lift

Level 2: products at the root

All volume products belong at the roots, never in the lengths – product in the ends only weighs hair down.

Level 3: hair fibres and hairpieces

Once the scalp starts to show through, styling alone won't go all the way.

Hair fibres are tiny keratin fibres that cling to your existing hair with static charge and give instant coverage along the parting or at the temples. Set them afterwards with KIS Finishing Spray, which is made specifically for the fibres and creates a flexible bond with your own hair. Both wash out at your next shampoo.

If you need more than coverage, a hairpiece in real hair gives both volume and length where it's needed most, on top of the head, and attaches to your own hair with small clips.

What works against volume

  • Heavy silicone products in the lengths
  • Conditioner too close to the scalp
  • Washing with water that's too hot, which leaves hair limp
  • Too many days in a row with dry shampoo, which eventually weighs hair down

Frequently asked questions

Do hair fibres show in rain or wind?

The fibres cling to the strands and stay put in both wind and light rain, especially if you set them afterwards. Heavy rain or a lot of sweating can make them start to run, though, so for a whole day outdoors in bad weather a hairpiece is the safer choice.

What's the difference between a hairpiece and a wig?

A hairpiece covers only part of the head, usually the area around the parting, and lets your own hair show all around it. It suits you if you still have your own hair but lack density. A wig covers the whole head and is the choice when your own hair is very sparse or gone.

Can volume styling damage fine hair?

The products themselves don't, but techniques like heavy backcombing every day wear down the cuticle, and fine hair has less margin than coarse hair. Choose root lift over backcombing, and give your hair a break from strong hold a few days a week.
