Butterfly weft is one of the easiest methods to fit yourself. The weft has pre-drilled holes and is attached with micro rings, so there is no need for needle and thread, glue or heat. Here we go through the whole installation step by step.

What you'll need

Prepare the hair

Start with clean, dry hair with no mask or oil through the lengths, or the rings will slide. Detangle thoroughly and clip up the hair above so you only work with one section at a time. Plan where the rows will sit: the lowest one a few centimeters above the nape, then one row at a time upwards with a couple of centimeters between them.

Step by step

  1. Part a straight line. Comb out a thin, straight section and clip up the hair above it. The line has to be straight all the way, otherwise the weft will sit crooked.
  2. Measure and cut the weft. Hold the weft against the head and cut it to width so it ends a couple of centimeters from the hairline on each side. Butterfly weft doesn't shed when cut.
  3. Pull the hair through the hole. Place the weft just below the parting and pull a small strand of your own hair through the hole in the weft with the hook, following the natural growth direction. Take a sensible amount of hair – too much weighs it down, too little comes loose.
  4. Lock it with two rings. Lock two micro rings together into one attachment point and close them with the pliers. The attachment should sit a few millimeters from the scalp, never directly against it.
  5. Work along the row. Repeat at even intervals along the whole weft. If your hair is fine, use more attachment points so the weight is evenly distributed instead of loading a few single spots.
  6. Let the hair down and check. Let the section above down and make sure the weft is fully covered. Tug gently on the weft – it should sit securely without pulling at the scalp.

How many rows do you need?

Each pack contains 50 grams. For added thickness alone, 50 to 100 grams is often enough, which is one to two rows. If you want both length and fullness, most people land on 150 to 200 grams, spread over three to four rows. Start with too little and add a row rather than the other way around.

Common mistakes

  • Crooked partings. If the line isn't straight, the weft shows when you put your hair up.
  • Too few attachment points. All the weight then lands on a few spots, which wears on your own hair.
  • Product in the attachments. Conditioner and masks go through the lengths, not at the rings.

Moving up and taking out

The hair grows out and the attachments travel downwards, so the weft needs to be moved up every two to three months. At the move-up you open the rings with the pliers, take the weft off and fit it again closer to the scalp. The hair is reused – only the rings are replaced.

Coloring and care

The hair is human hair and can be colored both darker and lighter. Have a hairdresser do the coloring and test on a small section first so the result is even. Otherwise, brush gently from the bottom up, wash with mild, moisturizing products and sleep with your hair in a loose braid.
