Toupee and men's wig are often used as if they were the same thing. At heart, there is only one difference: how much of the head is covered. A toupee covers the top of the head and the hairline, while your own hair on the sides and at the nape stays and remains visible. So it assumes that you still have hair there, and that it can be matched in colour and texture. A full men's wig covers the whole head. None of your own hair shows, which means you avoid the matching problem entirely and get full control over length, colour and density. If you have healthy hair growth on the sides and at the back, a toupee is usually the most natural choice. The transition between your own hair and the hair system is softer, and you wear less material on your head. If your own hair is thin on the sides as well, or has a colour that is hard to match, a full wig is both easier and better-looking. This is where they really differ. A toupee requires you to maintain your own hair around it: the same length, the same shade, regular cuts. A wig needs no such coordination, but does need its own care with products made for wigs and hairpieces. Both are attached with glue or tape if you want them to stay in place all day – you will find this under glue and tape. Plenty of your own hair left: toupee. Little of your own hair left: wig.
