Hair weft and Weft Hair – everything you need to know
Hair weft – also called Weft Hair – is the basis of many of our hair extensions. It is real hair gathered in a thin, sewn edge, so the hair can be sewn in, attached with micro rings or turned into your own clip-on set. Here we explain what hair weft is, which types there are and how to choose the right one for your hair.
What is hair weft?
A hair weft is a collection of hairs attached to a thin strip. The wefts are placed in rows in the hair and add both length and volume. Because the hair is gathered in one edge, larger amounts of hair can be fitted at once than with methods where the hair is attached strand by strand, such as keratin. Hair weft is also used for clip-on sets and for making wigs.
Traditional hair weft
Traditional hair weft has a strong sewn edge. It is durable, easy to adjust and ideal for sew-ins, because the edge can be sewn in again and again. It is especially suitable for thick hair and if you want lots of volume. Traditional hair weft is also the basis when we make full weaves, clip-on sets or wigs.
Invisible weft – the discreet option
Invisible weft has an ultra-thin edge that lies flat against the head and blends in almost invisibly. It suits fine to medium-thick hair when you want the most natural result possible, and the edge can be cut without fraying. Read more in our guide What is invisible weft?
Double drawn and butterfly weft
If you want maximum fullness all the way to the ends, there is double drawn, where the shorter hairs are sorted out so the hair is equally thick from the attachment to the ends. We explain the difference in our guide single vs double drawn. If you are looking for the flattest possible attachment, butterfly weft is the option.
How hair weft is attached
Hair weft can be attached in several ways. With a sew-in, the weft is sewn onto a braid for a secure hold. With micro weft, the weft is attached with micro rings, completely without glue. A full weave covers the whole head for maximum length and volume, and a Mesh installation combines wefts with a hair piece on top. Compare all methods on our hair extension methods page.
Clip-on sets and wigs
Hair weft can be cut to width and sewn together with clips into a clip-on set that you put in and take out yourself. The weft can also be sewn or glued onto a wig cap to create a custom wig – the same technique used for real hair wigs.
Quality, length and texture
Our hair weft comes in Classic, Premium and Luxury and in lengths from 40 to 70 cm. Premium and Luxury are Remy hair, where all the hairs lie in the same direction, and Luxury is our best quality. You can choose between straight, wavy, curly and Deep Wave hair as well as Yaki. See where each length ends in our length guide and match the colour with our colour chart.
Hair weft for different hair types
Which hair weft suits you best depends on your own hair. If you have thick hair, traditional hair weft often blends in well and gives lots of volume. If your hair is fine or thin, invisible weft can be a better choice, as the edge is thinner and lies flatter. Sew-ins work well even on thin hair, while micro weft is usually best for normal to thick hair. Always choose a texture close to your own hair.
Hair weft from Fairwithhair
We have worked with hair extensions since 2009, and in our salons in Stockholm and Uppsala we help you with both the hair and the fitting. With us you get honest advice on which hair and method suit you – and the weft can be moved up and reused until you decide to change your hair.
What does hair weft cost?
The price depends on the quality, length, amount of hair and the method you choose. On our page what do hair extensions cost you can see prices per method, with and without hair.
Caring for hair weft
Wash the hair gently with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner for real hair extensions, and let it air-dry where possible. Brush through the hair daily with a soft extension brush and gather it in a loose braid when you sleep. You will find more tips in our hair extension care tips.
