Peruk vid cellgiftsbehandling: så förbereder du dig innan håret börjar falla - Fairwithhair

Most people get in touch only once their hair has already started to fall out. It is perfectly possible to sort things out even then, but there are good reasons to get in touch earlier - and they have more to do with practicalities than emotions.

Why it is easier beforehand

When we can see your own hair, we can match the colour, length and shape of your hairline. We can see how your hair falls and where your parting is. The result is a wig that looks like you, not just a wig that suits you.

Then there is one simple practical matter: delivery times. A wig has to be ordered, fitted and cut in. This takes time, and it is harder to find that time in the middle of treatment.

When hair usually falls out during treatment

It varies between different treatments and different people, and your healthcare provider can tell you what applies to you specifically. Feel free to ask at your first visit - many people also receive their prescription then.

What we can say is that those who contact us a few weeks beforehand usually feel considerably calmer when it happens. By then, the wig is already at home.

Four things you need to decide on

Human Hair or synthetic. Human Hair feels softer, can be styled and lasts longer, but requires more care. Heat-resistant synthetic hair holds its shape itself and is easier in everyday life. Many people choose synthetic hair the first time precisely because it requires less maintenance.

Length. One piece of advice we often give: choose something similar to what you have now. Enough is already changing.

Cap construction. If your scalp is sensitive during treatment, you need a soft interior and a breathable construction. Let us know if you know that your skin reacts easily.

Complement. Many people also want a turban or head covering, for days at home when their head needs a break from the wig. It does not have to be either-or. We go through what feels good against sensitive skin in the guide to head coverings during cancer treatment.

Prescription

Your region reimburses hair replacement, as well as fitting and cutting in, up to an amount per calendar year. The amount and any co-payment vary between regions. Bring the prescription to your consultation and we will go through exactly what it covers in your case.

Good to know: the allowance does not cover washing or repairs, and it is calculated per calendar year. The complete process is described in Prescription step by step. You can see what applies where you live on the page for your region.

How it works with us

You start with a free consultation, either as a video call from home or in person in Uppsala or Stockholm. If you do not have the energy to leave home, the video call works just as well.

At the salon, you sit in a private space. You can bring a loved one, and you do not have to order anything that same day.

When the wig arrives, we book you in for fitting and cutting in, so that it fits correctly and is cut to suit your face. We also show you how to put it on yourself, and we go through this at the pace you need.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a wig fitted before I have received my prescription?

Yes. The consultation is free and does not commit you to anything, so many people come in first and arrange the prescription afterwards. We wait to place the actual order until the prescription is in place.

Does my own hair need to be shaved off?

No, this is not required. Some people choose to do so when their hair starts falling out unevenly, so they do not have to experience it gradually, while others keep what remains. The wig works both with and without your own hair underneath.

Can I change wigs during treatment if it does not feel right?

It happens, and there is nothing unusual about it - needs change during treatment. Get in touch and we will first look at whether it can be solved with adjustments to the fit, thinning or cutting, which is often enough. If you need a completely new wig, it depends on how much of this year's allowance you have left.
