Colour matching

3 steps to the right colour

  1. Look at your endsCompare with the colour of your ends and lengths – not your roots. That is where the transition between your hair and the extensions or wig is most visible.
  2. Compare in the colour chartThe colour chart shows all our colours and colour combinations. Look at them in daylight before you decide.
  3. Send a photoTorn between two shades? Send us a photo of your hair, taken in daylight from root to tip, and we will recommend the right colour.

Colour sample

Compare with your own hair

A colour sample is a small strand of real Luxury hair – the same hair as in our Luxury products. Hold it against your ends and lengths in daylight and you will see straight away whether the colour suits you.

Three colour samples are usually a good start. Buy 3, pay for 2 – and we send the samples with free shipping within Sweden.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Matching to the roots Choose by your ends and lengths – the roots are often darker.
  • Indoor light only Look at the colour in daylight so the comparison is accurate.
  • One colour for several shades If you have highlights or balayage, a mixed colour or two shades often gives a more natural result.
  • Chasing the exact same colour Extensions do not need to be exactly the same colour, but they should blend with the overall look.

FAQ

Questions about colour

Should I match the colour to my roots or my ends?
To your ends and lengths. Roots are often darker, and the ends are where the transition between your hair and the extensions shows.
What if I have highlights or balayage?
Choose a mixed colour or two shades. This usually looks more natural than a single colour.
What is a colour sample?
A small strand of real Luxury hair that you hold against your own hair in daylight. A colour sample costs 25 SEK, and if you buy three you pay for two – with free shipping within Sweden.
How do I send a photo for colour advice?
Upload the photo on our Send a photo page, or email it to info@fairwithhair.se. Take the photo in daylight and show all of your hair from root to tip.
Do the extensions have to be exactly the same colour as my hair?
No, but they should blend with the overall look. You can mix two shades, choose a colour with a highlight effect or get help from a stylist if colour adjustment is possible.
Can I get help with the colour in the salon?
Yes. Book a free consultation in Stockholm or Uppsala, or online, and we will match the colour, length and amount for you.
Can real hair extensions be coloured?
Real hair can usually be toned darker. We recommend having it coloured in a salon to protect the hair.
Why does the colour look different on my screen?
Screens show colours differently, and small variations can occur because every bundle of real hair is unique. Order a colour sample or send us a photo of your hair and we will help you.
Which colour should I choose if I am between two shades?
Choose the slightly lighter shade. Real hair can usually be toned darker in a salon, but vegan hair cannot be coloured.
Can I return hair extensions if the colour does not match?
You have a 14-day right of withdrawal, but hair extensions are a hygiene product and must be unused and in their original packaging. So check the colour in both daylight and indoor lighting before you open the packaging.

How to choose the right colour for hair extensions and wigs

The right colour is what makes hair extensions, a wig or a hair piece look natural. At Fairwithhair you will find lots of natural colours and colour combinations in real hair, and we are happy to help you find the one that suits your hair best. Here we explain how to compare colours, what to think about if you have several shades in your hair and how to get personal colour advice – in the salon, online or by sending a photo.

Match to your ends, not your roots
Always compare with the colour of your ends and lengths, not your roots. Roots are often darker than the rest of the hair, and the ends and lengths are where the transition between your own hair and the extensions is most visible. If you match to your roots, the extensions can easily end up too dark. Take a strand from your lengths and hold it against the colour you are considering.

Look in daylight
Indoor lighting can make hair look warmer, cooler, lighter or darker than it really is. So look at your hair and the colour you are comparing in natural daylight, ideally near a window. Remember too that screens show colours differently and that small variations can occur, because every bundle of real hair is unique. Our colour chart is a good starting point, but a colour sample in your hand gives the most reliable comparison.

Use the colour chart
The colour chart shows our colours sorted from darkest to lightest – from jet black and off-black, through dark brown, medium brown, light brown and chestnut brown, to dark blonde, medium blonde, light blonde, ash blonde, light ash blonde and platinum blonde. Every colour has a number, so it is easy to compare and to give the right colour when you order or ask us for advice. Next to each colour you will also see an example of how the shade looks in the hair. Think about your undertone too: cool undertones often suit ash blonde, beige and cool blonde shades, warm undertones suit golden, caramel and honey colours, and with a neutral undertone you can wear both warm and cool tones.

Highlights, balayage and several shades
Few people have exactly one colour throughout their hair. If you have highlights, balayage or natural variations, a mixed colour or two shades can look more natural than a single colour. The extensions do not need to be exactly the same colour as your hair, but they should blend with the overall look. You can, for example, mix two neighbouring shades to get the same depth and life as in your own hair.

Between two shades?
If you are unsure between two colours, it is usually wisest to choose the slightly lighter one. Real hair can usually be toned darker, and we recommend having it coloured in a salon to protect the hair. Vegan hair made of synthetic fibre, on the other hand, cannot be coloured, so it is especially important to choose the right colour from the start.

Colour samples in real Luxury hair
A colour sample is a small strand of real Luxury hair – the same hair as in our Luxury products. Hold it against your ends and lengths in daylight and you will see straight away whether the colour suits you. A colour sample costs 25 SEK, and if you buy three you pay for two. The samples are sent with free shipping within Sweden. Three colour samples are usually a good start – for example the colour you believe in most, one shade lighter and one shade darker.

Send a photo or book a consultation
Still unsure? Send us a photo of your hair. Take the photo in daylight and show all of your hair from root to tip, and we will assess colour, texture and amount and get back to you with a recommendation. You can also email the photos to info@fairwithhair.se. If you would rather meet, book a free consultation in our salon in Stockholm, two minutes from Odenplan, in Uppsala or online, and we will match colour, length and amount together.

Colour for wigs and hair pieces
The same tips apply when you choose the colour of a wig or a hair piece. If the hair piece is to blend with your own hair, match it to your ends and lengths just as with extensions, and look at the colour in daylight. Unsure which shade suits you? Book a free consultation and we will help you with colour, length, texture and style.

Before you open the packaging
Hair extensions are a hygiene product, and for a return to be accepted the product must be unused and in its original packaging. So check the colour in both daylight and indoor lighting before you open the packaging. You will find more tips on hair extensions, wigs and hair care in our hair guide and in our FAQ.
