A hair clip that is too small for your hair slips, pops open or loses its grip after an hour. That is why we sell our clips by amount of hair, not just by looks. Here we go through how to choose your size – and why it matters more the thicker your hair is.
Why the clip slips in thick hair
A clip holds when the teeth can grip around the whole updo from both sides. If the hair is thicker than the clip's opening, the teeth only grab part of it, and the weight of the rest pulls the clip down. It is rarely the spring that is too weak – usually the size is wrong.
Choose your size by amount of hair
- M · 9 cm – full updo in finer or shorter hair, half-up in thick hair.
- L · 10.5–11 cm – full updo in medium-thick to thick, mid-length hair.
- XL · 13 cm – full updo in very thick and long hair, and if you wear hair extensions.
Between two sizes? Choose the larger one if you are putting up all your hair. A clip that is slightly too big still holds – one that is too small does not.
How to tell how much hair you have
Gather your hair in a ponytail with your hand. If it fits easily between your thumb and index finger, M is often enough. If you need your whole hand to hold it, L is right. If the ponytail is thicker than that, or you wear hair extensions, choose XL.
How to place the clip so it stays
- Twist your hair upward along the back of your head into a tight roll.
- Open the clip fully and slide it in from the side, so the teeth go around the whole roll.
- Let the lower row of teeth catch the hair closest to your head – that is where the grip is.
Colors that blend in
Black and dark brown are matched to our color chart, 1 Jet Black and 2 Dark Brown, so the clip disappears into the hair. If you want it to show, choose one of the lighter colors. See the full range in Hair Clips or start with Hair Clip Vardag, available in M, L and XL.

Frequently asked questions
Which hair clip is best for thick hair?
A hair clip in L or XL. If you have very thick and long hair, or hair extensions, choose XL at 13 cm.
Why does my hair clip slip out?
Usually the clip is too small for the amount of hair, so the teeth only grab part of it. Try one size up.
Is a large hair clip heavy to wear?
Not if the size is right. A clip that grips the whole updo spreads the weight evenly and feels lighter than one that has to clamp hard.
Can I wear a hair clip in fine hair?
Yes. Choose M at 9 cm, so the hair fills the clip and it holds firmly.
Does a hair clip damage your hair?
A clip in the right size does not pull on a single point the way a tight ponytail does, which makes it a gentle way to put your hair up.
